LA Times: Vote Trump out in 2020 to Prevent Climate Apocalypse

Recommended Posts

Welp, we are all going to die due to Climate Apocalypse, because I don't see Trump not being re-elected in 2020.

Climate change is already here. 2020 could be your last chance to stop an apocalypse

By THE TIMES EDITORIAL BOARD

The world is drifting steadily toward a climate catastrophe. For many of us, that’s been clear for a few years or maybe a decade or even a few decades.  ...

... Decades of studied ignorance, political cowardice, cynical denialism and irresponsible dithering have allowed the problem to grow deeper and immeasurably harder to solve.

But today, we are at an important turning point. The changing climate is no longer an abstract threat lurking in our distant future — it is upon us. We feel it. We see it. In our longer and deeper droughts and our more brutal hurricanes and raging, hyper-destructive wildfires. And with that comes a new urgency, and a new opportunity, to act.  ...

... Here’s another reason we’re at a turning point (at least in the United States): An election is coming.

For three years, Americans have been living under the willfully blind, anti-scientific, business-coddling rule of President Trump, who has stubbornly chosen climate denial over rationality. We now have an opportunity to resoundingly reject his policies by voting him out of office, along with congressional Republicans who enable him. There are plenty of reasons to fight for Trump’s defeat in November 2020, but his deeply irresponsible climate policies — including moving to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement, roll back Barack Obama’s emission limits on coal-fired plants, rescind rules governing methane emissions and relax national fuel emission standards — are among the strongest.  ...

No major hurricanes have hit the US yet this year.  However, extremely persistent thunderstorms from Tropical Storm Imelda is causing massive flooding in parts of Texas right now.

I was born in SE Texas and have lived here most of my life, and hurricanes and tropical storms have been happening here for longer than I have been alive. I grew up down here and when you live with things like this you become accustomed to dealing with them. I have been to LA I can't even tell you how many times, and I have never felt the ground shake under my feet, but if the ground shakes under my feet in Texas we will be in panic mode for sure. I was southeast of downtown Houston when Alicia hit in the late summer of 1983, I rode it out with family and everything was fine. We expect a hurricane will hit us at least once every 3-5 years, so we know what has to be done and what to expect. "Ain't nuttin but a thing" for us. I actually left early from work yesterday to go home before the waters prevented me from getting there, no big deal.....

I will say this though, if we blindly follow what the Democrats are harping on we will have cleaner air and water when a large portion of us are broke, jobless, and homeless, it'll be great!! NOT!!

President Trump is not hypocritical enough to be the leader of the US.

In practice the Paris Accord on Climate Change is a PR stunt in 95% and 5% real stuff (and I am optimist),

and I do not understand why Trump advisors have not prevented him from losing a few million votes on this very topic.

Do what you need to do for business&industry and at the same moment brag how ecological etc. you are, Merkel approach is one of the best.

What I am going to say about CO2 emission containment is ABC but it is worth noting:

- Till about 1990s only OECD&Soviet block were significant CO2 emitters per capita in total about 1 billion people,

- Since 1990s additional 4 billion people in developing countries also wanted to live a decent life so their emissions skyrocketed,

and these additional 4 billion people will also significantly increase their per capita CO2 emission from present till 2030s.

- What mature economies like US or Western Europe will do actually does not matter.

Energy sector & transport sector are 2 biggest emitters.

Transport: Since Herr Daimler in 1884 (135 years ago!) there was no breakthrough invention in transport sector.

This electric vehicles is a nice addition to the fleet but even that 30+ billion of USD was spent on battery industry research,

it is still only an invention good for local urban commuting in small compact car but not real truck transport.

So only sensible way is to have better fuel economy and/or make cars more like privilege than staple.

Energy sector: In 1950s (over 60 years ago!) first commercial nuclear power plants were built.

And ever since that time the only scalable, low CO2 emission, baseload power source invented by humans is nuclear power.

Other then that you can burn hydrocarbons (which is stupid as they are rare) or coal, both huge sources of CO2 emission, coal 40% more,

than hydrocarbons.

Renewables (apart from hydro but only 15 countries or so are like Norway or Bhutan) are good for maximum 20-30% of generation provided that you are rich enough to use them.

And the major problem with nuclear power is that societies are not educated enough,

otherwise you would see nuclear reactors mushrooming in every country.

There were quite a few Bahamians who have gone through tropical storms. They thought they could ride out Dorian as well... The impact is worse than what had been reported so far:

Hurricanes are getting more intense due to Climate change. Ain't nuttin we have seen before...

It was deliberately over the top bad acting.  Funny as hell in the movie.

The actor is Paul Reubens, aka Pee Wee Herman.  It was his first movie role after he was arrested for publicly "enjoying himself" in an adult movie theatre.

That was before the internet opened up the world of porn to everyone, he wouldn't have to go to a theater to do that now....lol
