I grew up down here and when you live with things like this you become accustomed to dealing with them. I have been to LA I can't even tell you how many times, and I have never felt the ground shake under my feet, but if the ground shakes under my feet in Texas we will be in panic mode for sure. I was southeast of downtown Houston when Alicia hit in the late summer of 1983, I rode it out with family and everything was fine. We expect a hurricane will hit us at least once every 3-5 years, so we know what has to be done and what to expect. "Ain't nuttin but a thing" for us. In practice the Paris Accord on Climate Change is a PR stunt in 95% and 5% real stuff (and I am optimist), and I do not understand why Trump advisors have not prevented him from losing a few million votes on this very topic. Marcin + 519 MS September 21, 2019 What I am going to say about CO2 emission containment is ABC but it is worth noting: - Till about 1990s only OECD&Soviet block were significant CO2 emitters per capita in total about 1 billion people, - Since 1990s additional 4 billion people in developing countries also wanted to live a decent life so their emissions skyrocketed, and these additional 4 billion people will also significantly increase their per capita CO2 emission from present till 2030s. - What mature economies like US or Western Europe will do actually does not matter. Energy sector & transport sector are 2 biggest emitters. Transport: Since Herr Daimler in 1884 (135 years ago!) there was no breakthrough invention in transport sector. This electric vehicles is a nice addition to the fleet but even that 30+ billion of USD was spent on battery industry research, it is still only an invention good for local urban commuting in small compact car but not real truck transport. So only sensible way is to have better fuel economy and/or make cars more like privilege than staple. Energy sector: In 1950s (over 60 years ago!) first commercial nuclear power plants were built. And ever since that time the only scalable,low CO2 emission, baseload power source invented by humans is nuclear power. Other then that you can burn hydrocarbons (which is stupid as they are rare) or coal, both huge sources of CO2 emission, coal 40% more, than hydrocarbons. Renewables (apart from hydro but only 15 countries or so are like Norway or Bhutan) are good for maximum 20-30% of generation provided that you are rich enough to use them. And the major problem with nuclear power is that societies are not educated enough, otherwise you would see nuclear reactors mushrooming in every country. They thought they could ride out Dorian as well...
