Is the United Nations a Failure and Should it be Disbanded?

This week the United Nations has been in the news as it held it’s 74^th United Nations General Assembly

Once again it was a circus where a teenager was allowed to berate her elders and various leaders used the podium to forward their political agendas.

My question is:

Is the United Nations a failure and should it be disbanded?

The main agenda of the United Nations at its founding was to prevent future wars and suffering on a mass scale. As millions have died in a multitude of conflicts around the world in the more than 50 years since the establishment of the United Nations, this must be viewed as a failure.

Another objective of the United Nations was to promote human rights worldwide. These human rights continue to be violated by many regimes, on a horrific scale. Considering that voting rights in the United Nations General Assembly are not linked to a regime’s human rights record, and that China, a gross abuser of human rights, sits on the United Nations Security Council, the entire concept of the United Nations as a promoter of human rights is laughable.

The United Nations suffers from a bloated bureaucracy, in which seniority is not linked to ability, resulting in a glacially slow decision making process, and operational failure is crises such as Rwanda and Yugoslavia. Some United Nations organizations such as UNESCO have been viewed as so corrupt that some countries, the USA and UK among them, have withdrawn from the organization. The US Congress has long withheld part of the dues it owes to the United Nations in a protest against the corruption and money wasting.

There are also institutional problems associated with the General Assembly and the Security Council, whereby General Assembly resolutions with widespread support can be stymied by a single vote from one of the permanent five members of the security council.

Much of the progress made internationally since 1945 has not involved the United Nations at all. The Cold War and mutually assured destruction kept the peace between nuclear armed nations, while the WTO, IMF, GATT and the World Bank have functioned independently of the United Nations to promote greater prosperity.

Recent United Nations ‘failures’ include:

·       The widespread corruption and abuse of the Oil-for-Food Programme in Iraq.

·       The rapid increase of prostitution in Cambodia, Mozambique, Bosnia and Kosovo after United Nations, and in the later two cases, NATO peacekeeping forces moved in.

·       Sexual misconduct by United Nations troops in Congo, Cambodia, Cote d’Ivoire and Haiti.

·       Corruption by United Nations officials in Kosovo.

·       United Nations aid workers from Nepal were determined to be the source of a cholera outbreak in Haiti which killed more than 10,000 Haitian and sickened thousands more. The United Nations claimed ‘diplomatic immunity’ and refused to pay compensation.

Today, we think of the U.N. as a very divided and weak organization.  However, it appears to have the seeds for a one world government in the future that may become a very united and powerful organization.  This may happen as the world around us starts to unravel and fall apart.

And the fruit of them is, in your words, 'very divided and weak'. 

I won't hold my breath for currently planted seeds.

United Nations serves well, is beneficial for only 190 countries, that are too weak for unilateral actions,

United Nations existence is more or less neutral to 3-5 other countries that are strong enough to defend themselves,

United Nations is a problem for 1 country that till last decade thought it is too strong to be part of UN.

Yes it is a failure but no it should not be disbanded. It should be recognized for what it is. A large organization of nations which gives everyone a forum to lodge their opinions and grievances. The majority gets to say whatever they want but the Security Council seems to control major decisions. We need to keep a close eye on what they do though because they are a tool of Globalism and we cannot allow it to control other nations unless they are severely abusing their people. Even that is a danger area due to the possibility of undue interference.
