Donald Trump snubbed East Asia Summit 3rd time in a row

Recommended Posts

US President was not present at annual East Asia Leaders meeting for the 3rd time in a row. (in 2017, 2018, 2019)

Trump actually left the Asia for Asians as China has always asked him to do.

In 2017 Trump even managed to reach the venue in Philippines but he suddenly felt homesick so boarded Air Force One early, exactly at the start of the meeting.

It was The Perfect Snub, already noted in Guinness World Records (sarcasm)

In 2018 he sent VP Mike Pence, in 2019 National Security Advisor (Mr.Nobody so not worth even mentioning his name, should have sent at least Ivanka and Jared).

On the other hand India, Japan, China Prime Ministers, all other 17 leaders are always present, bar some real turmoil in home country.

Maybe because it is their job to be at the Summit and also patriotic to pursue country's interest.

It is the EAST ASIA LEADERS MEETING, is it not? The last I checked the US is NOT in East Asia so the American President is not required to attend - correct?

In 2011 United States & Russian Federation joined East Asia Summit, because they wanted very much.

United States wanted to show their allies how they care about Asia vs rise of China.

US President was present in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016.

At present it is the most important meeting of Asian Leaders (in comparison to APEC also India, Thailand, Myanmar and a few smaller countries present). SImply the place to be.

So what! It is a meeting by and for Asian nations, the US President is not required to attend.

In 2018 the US Vice President attended, but that isn’t good enough? In 2019 the US National Security Advisor showed up, again not good enough.

If Trump DID attend you’d just say something like , ‘Trump attends Asian Meeting Uninvited’. Anything he does is wrong according to you.

I do not have bias pro- or against anything, also Trump.

It is a big difference for these Asian Leaders whether US President attends the Summit or not. It means a lot for them.

Otherwise it is "Asia for Asians" as Chinese often say. But they really  think "Asia for Chinese".

Without US engagement, Asia is just Chinese backyard, nothing more.

China is about 45% of Asian GDP nominal, and 40% in PPP terms.

And I do not see this engagement and has not seen it in the past. It is not sth Trump neglected, it predates Trump.

But Obama was at least trying: with TPP agreement, pivot to Asia - if Obama had Hillary's balls pivot would be much more succesful. Obama was also making some PR, attending this meetings.

Perhaps, if Asian countries would like US involvement in Asia, they could organize a summit or meeting in Washington to discuss it. What a novel idea!

The reason that they do not is that they are afraid of losing deals with China. If the US President shows up at THEIR meeting they can claim that they were allowing it for reasons of ‘good manners’. If they travel to the US for a meeting then they are actually taking a stand and making a statement.

Sometimes you just have to grow a set of balls...

Notice where Russia is. More than half the country is Asian. I know a Russian woman from Sakhalin, looks 100% Asian but speaks fluent Russian. Most of the island is ethnically Japanese. You meet Russians from Siberia and unless they were "transplanted" for political reasons, they look like Mongolians (because they are).

Given the trade tariffs with China, it only makes sense we aren't there. Neocons might want perpetual war but Trump doesn't.  If he went reporters would claim he was there to cut a trade deal and then crucify him when he came back without one, because fake news

Could not disagree. I do not follow impeachment soap opera in detail, but there was news that over half of Americans want impeachment to proceed. fake news. But Trump has brilliant advisors, he has chosen main campaign topics himself: Biden corruption, China threat, stop foreign wars. And impeachment: Real tribune of people embattled by establishment, eye-watering saga.
