If there are 7.8 billion humans on the planet, they probably make up less than .001 of the total mass of the planet, or even .001 of the mass of the biosphere... whatever .001 means. It appears that some unit of measure is missing in the title.

The issue isn't the percentage of some component of the atmosphere or the landmass, but it's reactivity. Something 1000 times as reactive as something else only needs to exist in a ratio of 1 to .001 to produce the same outcome.
