Continental Shelf Petroleum

It looks like continental shelves all over the world provide a great deal of petroleum and also future petroleum possibilities.

The biggest area looks to be north of Russia. Just imagine something much more than the North Sea, Alaska North Slope, etc.

Well, it helps if you have a major river dumping out on the continental shelf to create a depositional environment and source material for the generation of fossil fuels.

Continental shelves, in an of themselves, do not necessarily indicate that oil or gas will be found there.

Also some offset orogeny adjacent to a basin for providing heat, pressure and basin flexure may also be needed.
