Experts said US losing ground to China on AI

Recommended Posts

China’s public intention to become the world leader in the development of artificial intelligence has many in the United States questioning what the U.S. government is doing to protect the country’s dominant position in the AI race. U.S. technology companies, such as Google, Facebook and Apple, still lead foreign rivals in AI technology. But some observers say the U.S. government has sat on the sidelines. Experts fear that, without action from the White House, the U.S. could lose technological ground to China.

According to a study published recently by economists at the University of Toronto, 23% of the authors of papers presented at the 2017 AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence were Chinese, compared to just 10% in 2012. At the same time, the share of US authors fell from 41% to 34%. The economists see this change as indicative of China’s rise to prominence in AI, and a harbinger of a future battle for AI supremacy between China and the US.

Of $15.2 billion invested in AI startups globally in 2017, 48% went to China and 38% to America (US was 77% in 2013).

Oh, why must everything be a race? Can't we all work together to prepare for the alien invasion Elon Musk will bring on all our heads with his dabblings on Mars?

There's a military AI race in triangle China, Russia and U.S.A. There are no regulations. And, "big " are always fighting for the first place: science, military, AI, sport, etc... In my opinion, this is the only way to stay on top on top.

Amen. And when the zombie apocalypse comes upon us, we will all need to work together.
