The Department of Energy (DOE) is allocating a total of approximately $6.5 million toward investing in research and development of larger-scale coal-powered systems. The investment will go towards helping the nine companies implement the first pilot stages of their projects, meant to focus on improving "coal-powered systems’ performance, efficiency, emission reduction, and cost of electricity." The funding is part of a larger $50 million investment opportunity announced by the department in August 2017 to support the development, design and construction of "transformational coal technologies."

Might as well. Take out the middle man. Seems like EV batteries are recharged using coal power. So let's take out the battery entirely and start manufacturing that coal-powered automobile!
