He bought a controlling interest in TWA in 1985 and took it private in '86. Which on the surface looked like a good move for the long troubled airline. Wrong. Shortly after he began selling off long time lucrative routes while retrenching the once proud carrier into a shell of its former self. All while lining his own pockets as thousands found themselves out of a job. Many were lifelong employees of the carrier. Buffett believes in Building up a company. Ichan only sees the profits he'll pocket as he breaks up a company selling it piecemeal too the highest bidder. Perfect examples of this: BNSF was purchased by Burkshire-Hathaway and taken private. Buffett poured Billions into the rail carrier. Re-equipping it with newer more modern locomotives. Expanding route structure while capturing new market share. Ichan; see above comments regarding TWA. In 1992 as TWA entered bankruptcy yet again Ichan was forced out by the unions. Sadly it was too little too late as a couple years later American Airlines swooped in an bought up what was left of TWA in a fire sale. I know Ichan has submitted a slate of new directors for vote at the upcoming shareholder meeting.
