I would agree that they have overshot the mark in terms of reaction, here too, but the Governors/Other officials are trying to protect public health (as they see it, elected officials as you pointed out) based on health warnings, guidance from experts IN A NATIONAL EMERGENCY people! Some of the footage popular to demonstrate conditions in NYC hospitals was from Milan in Italy. The NYC hospitals did get overwhelmed, did run out of materials and equipment, and that is partially responsible for their high death rates. Similar for Detroit. But that level of hospitalization of very severe cases is down substantially. They are going down the severity scale in triage for admission.

Point taken, but still, the pathway for any republican either statewide or presidental in michigan still lies in parts of the greater detroit area, especially in Macomb County. It, like most of southeast michigan, was hard hit in the outbreak and I think would be especially sympathetic with any public health-related shutdown. These are also areas that Whitmer did well in 2018 (along with larger turnout in detroit proper). 2016 looked like this: 2

As an example of overly restrictive and arbitrary restrictions, here in Michigan, it is oddly prohibited to purchase garden seeds. Madness. The time to stop this lockdown madness was back in January, 2020. But alas, the federal government is led by a guy who decided to go golfing and hold clap-for-me rallies with his merry band of red hat wearing morons, all while claiming Coronavirus was a liberal hoax not much worse than the common flu. Consequently, state governors had to step in and flatten the infection curve so it didn't go exponential. If you don't get the start of a pandemic right you wind up with stay-at-home orders. If you relax those stay-at-home orders you wind up with Americans dying on the floors of hospitals operating way beyond design capacity. If you really screw up the early response by not stocking up on personal protective equipment for your hospitals you wind up killing off your medical staff. So, if you don't like the stay-at-home orders get in your time machine and tell someone to tell Donald to resign in December 2019. You should probably also travel back to 2014 and tell the Tea Party idiots to fund the national stockpile of PPE. 1

The big hospital over on the East Side of Manhattan has these refrigerated trailers out back, where the dead are stacked. At night, the locals in the neighborhood apartment building listen to the thunk of the bodies being stacked inside the trailers - thunk, - thunk, - thunk, interminably, all night long, as the hundreds of dead are accumulated. That is demoralizing and depressing. It is pushing some locals into looking at real estate in the rural areas, including upstate New York and Vermont and Maine. For the workers in that hospital, it is very demoralizing, those are patients that they have lost to the disease. It is hard on everyone near there, it is visceral, not on some TV screen with some commentator. Nothing like a corpse being heaved into a truck to bring home what they are dealing with. 1
UNC12345 + 171 AB April 22, 2020 After that post Jan, I am still interested to hear from others who have written that we have all overreacted, it's all a hoax and compared numbers to the seasonal flu. How can you read the above and not think this is something more? And this is with severe mitigation efforts in our communities...can you imagine what it would be like if we kept on acting as we usually do? Having said that, I know we have to get back to life, but just don't push the idea that this is comparable to the flu!
Douglas Buckland + 6,308 April 22, 2020 Playing the Devil’s Advocate.... So what is the point of following all of these Draconian mandates if, when it is all over, you have nothing to live for. You now no longer have a job, you can’t pay the note on the house or the car, you are going hungry and about to become homeless. People who live in houses, or rurally, have no concept of the hardship of living in a small apartment under ‘house arrest’ conditions. Also, I keep seeing nurses and first responders saying, ‘Stay at home’! Which is understandable, but keep in mind that they still have jobs and are NOT staying at home.

SUZNV + 1,197 April 22, 2020 (edited) I read somewhere that there is a hypothesis that children have low mortality rate than adult's because they always carry many virus within them. It is just like grasses and weeds, if grass grows fast enough, then less space and sunlight for weeds. If the influenza infects cells faster than Covid19, then the covid19 has limited ground to grow. Take VN as an example, they have 3 things that may reduce the spread and damage of Covid19: everybody wears mask (and gloves) because of the sun and air pollution and on their own motorbikes (minimum public transport), all got BCG vaccines, and lots of virus on them already with the dense population and pollution. If Covid19 can spread there, then it should spread even before Italy as they didn't (dare to) close the border with China and lots of Chinese were travelling around the country while Wuhan locked down. It is social habits and the way people commute around everyday in big cities that decides the infection rate of Covid19. I cannot see the testing can help much in containing process if there was no symptom, even with test with accuracy of 100%. We should develop habit of social distancing from now on, with masks. In middle of March, one of my wife's coworker got sick and went to local hospital in MN for testing. After checking they gave him a paper said "likely flu" and asked him to go home and self quarantine for 2 weeks. He wasn't tested. So it was the clinic's decision to save the tests for critical cases or not. Should he complain to Trump :"they didn't give me the test" or "you are lying"? Photos of extended middle fingers, the mayor dropping the Staten Island groundhog and news coverage of him going to the gym have all been texted to a special tip line that de Blasio announced Saturday, according to screenshots posted on Twitter. Yoshiro Kamamura + 274 YK April 22, 2020 Well, the inhabitants of the "overly restrictive" nations like Australia, some European states, can enjoy the luxurious privilege of being alive. The "laizess-faire" "personal freedom" ideological camps like the USA, Britain, Sweden, etc. don't know where to bury their dead, USA having staggering number of fatalities, 35% of known cases. It's obvious that the absence of the universal healthcare system (US healthcare being designed to cater to the rich and empty the pockets of the rest) is a dangerous experiment indeed. But you can always protest - you can drive the 5 tons SUV through the empty streets, honk the horn and shout "LIBERATE MINESOTA!". Liberate from whom? The residual traces of sanity?
