Dr. Fauci Backed Controversial Wuhan Lab with U.S. Dollars for Risky Coronavirus Research

https://www.newsweek.com/dr-fauci-backed-controversial-wuhan-lab-millions-us-dollars-risky-coronavirus-research-1500741

The National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the organization led by Dr. Fauci, funded scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and other institutions for work on gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses.

In 2019, with the backing of NIAID, the National Institutes of Health committed $3.7 million over six years for research that included some gain-of-function work. The program followed another $3.7 million, 5-year project for collecting and studying bat coronaviruses, which ended in 2019, bringing the total to $7.4 million.

Many scientists have criticized gain of function research, which involves manipulating viruses in the lab to explore their potential for infecting humans, because it creates a risk of starting a pandemic from accidental release.

I hate to say I told you so......(but not really)

Gov. Newsom knows his "orders" have no teeth, i.e. he has no authority to order people to continue the quarantine and put their lives on hold now that data shows his reasoning to be flawed.  All he can do is tell people they he believes they are wrong, but he cannot force anyone to do what he wants.  People, smart people, the same smart people that they were yesterday, before you decided to play omni-powerful Nation-State all powerful ruler, facts be damned, are saying enough is enough.  In the article below, Gov. Newsom is criticizing two northern California counties.  One might keep in mind that northern California is also where Silicon Valley is located, where supposedly some of the most brilliant minds in the world are congregated.  But, in an effort to put these people into some sort of basket of deplorables, the story condescendingly refers to them as "rural" counties, as if to say "not the smartest people"; not like US.  The people of those "rural" counties are saying we are exercising our rights to choose whether we continue to stay at home and risk total loss of income, now and into the future, in the face of the new data which does not support the Governor's claims.

The "I told you so" part is that he is essentially letting the people open the state, thereby relieving himself of the responsibility.  That smacks of a leader that is not so sure after all, but who is damn-sure he has to protect his re-election bid.

Newsom calls reopening Yuba and Sutter counties a ‘big mistake’ amid coronavirus crisis

MAY 5, 2020
2:47 PM
SACRAMENTO —

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday criticized two rural Northern California counties that are allowing businesses and restaurants to reopen, saying their decision to defy his statewide stay-at-home order has put their communities at increased risk for a new coronavirus outbreak.

Sutter and Yuba counties, both north of Sacramento, allowed businesses to reopen on Monday after a similar decision was made in Modoc County in California’s northeastern corner. Officials in the three counties argued that they were less affected by the COVID-19 pandemic than hot spots such as Los Angeles and the Bay Area and said the shutdown was hurting their local economies.

“They’re making a big mistake. They’re putting their public at risk. They’re putting our progress at risk,” Newsom said during a COVID-19 briefing in Sacramento on Tuesday. “These are real exceptions. The overwhelming majority of Californians are playing by the rules doing the right thing.”

But Newsom did not say if the state would take any action to enforce the stay-at-home order and other statewide restrictions in those counties.

This thread is based in an incorrect premise. The COVID 19 is a dangerous pathogen that can cause thrombosis in otherwise healthy people, it can clot blood and other bodily fluids in human organs, causing them to fail suddenly. In the USA alone, it has killed in the course of a few months more people than the whole ten years of Vietnam war. I don't understand how can anyone call it a "political hoax", it just does not make sense. It's a real phenomenon that is claiming human lives every day, especially in the USA and Britain due to mishandling and failures of the governments of these countries.

Bullshit.  The general premise is correct

Please note the bits that I bolded for emphasis in the opening comment.

ANALYSIS / OPINION:

The new coronavirus is real.

The response to the coronavirus is hyped.  And in time, this hype will be revealed as politically hoaxed.

In fact, COVID-19 will go down as one of the political world’s biggest, most shamefully overblown, overhyped, overly and irrationally inflated and outright deceptively flawed responses to a health matter in American history, one that was carried largely on the lips of medical professionals who have no business running a national economy or government.

The facts are this: COVID-19 is a real disease that sickens some, proves fatal to others, mostly the elderly — and does nothing to the vast majority.

That’s it.

That, in a nutshell, is it.

============================================================

"Future shocks" is described as a series of events which come so fast that the human brain cannot absorb the information. As I said earlier, science has shown that there are clearly marked limits to the amount of changes and the nature of them that the mind can deal with. After continuous shocks, the large targeted population group discovers that it does not want to make choices any more. Apathy takes over, often preceded by mindless violence such as is characteristic of the Los Angeles street gangs, serial killers, rapists and child kidnappers.

Such a group becomes easy to control and will docilely follow orders without rebelling, which is the object of the exercise."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Begging_the_question

In classical rhetoric and logic, begging the question is an informal fallacy that occurs when an argument's premises assume the truth of the conclusion, instead of supporting

Ex:

Covid-19 hype is a political hoax therefore the appearence of murder hornets is part of a plan to discourage people from going out..

Covid-19 hype is a political hoax therefore an episode TV show filmed some months after the SARS and describing a pandemic  is proof that the current pandemic is staged / was planified or whatever..

Can't argue with that..

< sigh >

Why do I feel like I am neverendingly pushing a boulder up a mountain?

Anyway, have a read of this; excerpt below:

Opinion: Continuing The Shutdown Is Downright Immoral

... First of all, let’s address how the left views this. They have framed this as a choice between certain death or making money for greedy CEO’s. They promote the argument that the jobs we have taken from 30 million (and still counting!) Americans should be dismissed as “amoral dollars and cents.” Amoral? Please! How is a young couple working entry level jobs to get their start in the work force and to put together a few coins to start a family, amoral? How is a man working his keister off to start and run a family business, who gives people their first opportunity in the labor force, amoral? They aren’t. Period.

What is amoral, nay outright immoral, is arbitrarily deciding to deprive a certain class of American citizens of their fundamental right to feed their families. What could be more immoral than restricting the movements of American citizens who have committed no crime. Compounding said immorality, we did this based on little to no evidence that they posed any real danger to anyone but an extremely small segment of society. That segment could have been easily protected without trampling on civil rights of the rest of our citizenry. This is the first time that I know of, that we effectively quarantined American citizens whom we had no idea whether or not they were carriers of some disease.

We have driven and continue to drive the engine of our standard of living, small businesses into bankruptcy and placing most of their employees into penury. What is really sad, is that the people least able to weather such an economic storm are the ones most affected. People in more highly paid occupations, tend to be in jobs not as affected by social distancing measures as those at lower pay rates, who work in service industry jobs requiring in person contact with other people. They are truly suffering. A paltry $1,200.00 check will do little to pay the rent and put food on the table, much less restore the dignity that having meaningful work and paying your way through life affords.

The folks who can least afford this paycheck interruption or worse, permanent loss of the jobs they formerly occupied, are the very ones who have been put out of work by this overreaction and disregard for American rights. By doing this, we have created two classes, haves and have nots, all by government fiat. Some of this might have been justifiable early on. Not so anymore. At this point, what every state Governor but one is doing, is flat out wrong—it’s immoral and needs to stop. Now.  ...

No it disproportionally affects the very old, infirm, those with multiple comorbidities and the obese.

If you are not one of the above you have very little chance of dying

Tom,

I'm wondering about the regular references / links to "redstate.com".

I've asked a similar question before I realize, but this one site in particular sticks with me.  How is this site independent or more worthy of your trust than the MSM?  Seems to me that all the contributors are of a similar viewpoint, saying similar conservative things.  Curious..

Red State is a smaller, conservative news site that I've stumbled across, and it also occasionally shows up in my alternate news feed on 8kun.

If you want something a bit more "mainstreamish" style Conservative news site, try Conservative Treehouse aka The Last Refuge

90% of MSM in the U.S. is owned by 6 companies, and they are simply different variations of similar agendas.  Which is why I prefer more independent sites for my news.

Point is: you can't reopen without testing. People won't feel safe. Even if "everything reopened" according to the state governments people are still going to make individual decisions based on their own personal well being.  What this means is that a large minority of people will still opt out of any economic activity, denting GDP growth significantly enough to get Trump to lose the next election.  So your solution of "reopening" doesn't help.

That is, perhaps, the most misguided statement I have ever read here. The 'solution' of reopening is to re-establish personal freedom. At that point, allow people to freely make individual decisions based on their own personal well being. I am mystified at how people think that any of this has anything to do with an election.

I agree with you 100% that a large percentage of people will be behaviorally scarred by this for life. Real economic activity is going to be meaningfully reduced at the margin. The future looks bleak. But people must be free to choose their own course. Freedom is a natural right. If government officials strongly suggested social distancing measures, without officially shutting down anything, and 'enforcing' nothing, most of the outrage would dissipate.
