A Battery-Powered Oil Platform?

Recommended Posts

Woodside and ABB will replace one of the gas turbines on Woodside's Goodwyn platform with a battery pack.

"Woodside said the battery installation would reduce its fuel usage by about 2000 tonnes annually, and cut carbon emissions from the platform by 5 per cent a year."

That's really great as far as emissions go but it sounds a bit paradoxical: they're using batteries to power the extraction of oil, which produces emissions, so... But good news, I suppose. Perhaps we'll get some solar-powered platforms one day.

Sounds super paradoxical. Weird!

Yes unusual way to put two so much different things to work together. Is it a good news or bad? Can't decide.

I feel like we keep circling around this topic in this forum. I don't find it paradoxical at all. This is how it should be ... remember the California solar project that's planning to produce oil? Again, renewables vs fossil fuels has become a ridiculously partisan issue when it should be, and even Big Oil gets that. It can never be a jump from fossil fuels to renewables; it has to be a smart transition, and this Woodside battery installation is smart and perfectly rational.
