Normally  such viruses should mutate into a more contagious and less lethal form because the virus has no interest in killing the host.

This has historically been the case with viruses of a similar type, and at least such are the optimistic assumptions that the coronavirus will become a seasonal disease in the future.

But bad mutations, unfortunately, cannot be ruled out, although the ones described above are more frequent in history of viruses mutations.
