Retired RAF pilot wins legal challenge over a wind farm

The guy is an ex military and civilian pilot - that would equip him with more than adequate skills to risk assess the 'hazard' from EMF from a cable buried underground 80 metres away.

I assume you will be defending the protesters against gas / oil pipelines with equal vigour? On that basis you must empathise with  the Keystone Pipeline protesters who have effectively blocked and got the project thrown out?

Exactly, more power to the people. Including no drilling for oil and nat gas within sight or sound of homes. Refineries cause cancer clusters among other problems. I’m happy the courts sided with the home owner.

Except this would have been an electrical cable 80 metres away underground which would have been silent and not able to leak anything.

Good luck proving any health effects. The EMF brigade are the true tin foil hatters.

I presume because as an ex RAF and commercial pilot the guy must have a good grasp of physics and therefore EMF issues.

You would think, but obviously not.

You get exposed to a significant amount of ionizing radiation when flying at high altitude.  Seems odd a fearless military pilot would be afraid of a tiny amount of background radiation.

A plane filled with explosive liquids, carrying warheads, at high altitude and high speed is safe enough, but that power line down the street is too risky.... Hmmm.

Bill Gates, the vaccine, and 5G!

Tom can fill you in on the "facts."

Its entirely driven by NIMBYISM .

Id have some sympathy if they planned to build a huge factory opposite his house. In reality all that is  happening is for 4-5 months in his area the company will be digging a deep trench laying  cables. Refilling and moving on. The wind farm companies have even got together to lay cabling in a combined trench to reduce overall disruption although I guess that also makes economic sense.

After the construction phase an invisible development with zero impact.

It worries me that a single well to do ish individual and a Judge (probably mates at the local golf club / Masons) can hold up major national infrastructure projects. In this case 4.2 GW of offshore wind energy / 6% of UK electricity consumption.

We have had it all on here.

A certain prolific poster was claiming cows grazing fields with wind turbines in them can't produce milk.

Likewise underwater, the offshore turbines are the No. 1 menace to fish. Never mind the factory trawlers which coincidentally can't fish in and around the wind farms......

But if they build a CCGT or nuke the power lines would be ok?

This power cable was going to be buried and 80m from his house. I hope Vattenfall appeal this.

The electromagnetic fields transcend the limited amounts of earth under which the cables could be buried, and it is not feasible to bury the incoming cables from offshore. Maintenance on underwater cables is prohibitive.

Meanwhile in the real world

Trenches, into which cables would be laid from the wind farm to onshore substations, would pass within 80m (262ft) of Mr Pearce's house.

Installation depth about 5 ft.........how much exposed cable in transit?

There would certainly be electromagnetic field issues.

At the distances and with 10's metres of soil between the cable and nearby houses (80 metres) a tiny fraction of what you would get off a mobile held to your ear, or standing by an  induction  or  microwave oven .

Also bundling the cables together in a service pipe to a certain level has a cancelling effect on each other.
