2020 new commissioners for the Texas Railroad Comission (oversight body for oil and gas operations) and a referendum on flaring.  Then in 2021, new rules from the state legislature.

Merely being able to ‘see’ flaring fromthe naked eye or a satellite is remarkably bad for determining volume.  It’s easy to be off by a factor of 100 or so on the volume of gas actually being flared based on visible data only.  Houston is an especially poor example, because there aren’t any wells there.  Any visible burning of hydrocarbons there is related to something other than production of oil or gas from wells.  If it is plant and process related (which it has to be) then a lit flare is required continuously by state and federal law at every facility conducting processing. This is NOT what is measured or gauged when statistics on gas flaring are concerned.  Most flares at plants and refineries are kept lit by butane or propane until a process flare off is required, and are not regulated (or measured) in the same statues as production flaring.

Your genius. The light emitting from Houston at night compares with the light from flared fields in west Texas. You being the experienced oil guy can’t grasp the volume it takes to create a light similar to the 6 million people around Houston. Case in point why Texas has pollution at dangerous levels. I’ll give you a unscientific hint. That much light generated requires extreme volumes of stupidity and nat gas.

Oh it doesn't take much energy to point out your dumb posts. Seriously, you think Trump will be Speaker in 2022 yet the earliest the Republicans can take charge of the House is January 3, 2023. Unfortunately your intellect has run its course. Just a thought.

America's major imports have, in recent years come from Canada. We are exporters of oil and natural gas. I have been promoting natural gas for nine years or more. There is a nearly unending source of it in the world on land and at sea. Trump led us there by encouraging it. Biden has caused high prices by discouraging transport and production, then asking OPEC to sell more to us to lower prices. Many on this site want high wholesale and retail prices for oil and natural gas. I do not. I want fair prices. The wholesale retail spread has doubled with Biden. I have watched that for years to. I know how to read charts and data but they don't include inflation. At least not the ones I have seen for general use. Your comment makes no sense to me.

We don’t export hardly any oil drilled in the US. The US produces what it consumes for the last 1 1/2 years and before that we imported. All oil and petroleum products are imported, refined, stored or reshipped. Your saying the US needs these Canadian imports to the tune of 3-4 mbpd per day is wrong. I think you probably know this but like Trump, repeat the big lie anyhow.

What's a few months amoungest friends? American Folklore

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes again
Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need of some stranger's hand
In a desperate land
This is the end

just a note this plant in Sweden at full production will reduce global demand for oil by 15 million barrels a year for each year in production.....in other words 40,000 BPD each year so after 20 years 800,000 BPD . A drop in the bucket ????? Reality Peak oil is happening right now as their are in the US alone 12 major plants under construction. Around the globe ? 60 to 70 or more plants that will reduce oil demand by 1 percent each year they are in production. Happy New Year ....it is the year of the Battery

Europe’s $12 billion battery start-up produces its first lithium-ion cell

PUBLISHED WED, DEC 29 20215:36 AM ESTUPDATED THU, DEC 30 20214:12 AM EST
  • Northvolt said it’s the first battery of its kind to have been fully designed, developed and assembled at a “gigafactory” by a homegrown European battery company.
  • The battery cell came off the production line on Tuesday.
  • The majority of the world’s electric car batteries are currently made in the U.S. and Asia, but Northvolt hopes to change that.

Swedish battery maker Northvolt announced Wednesday it has produced its first lithium-ion battery cell at its factory in Skelleftea, meeting its deadline to start production at the plant before the end of 2021.

Northvolt, which was valued at $12 billion by investors in June, said it’s the first battery of its kind to have been fully designed, developed and assembled at a so-called gigafactory by a homegrown European battery company.

A gigafactory can be classed as a large-scale battery plant where the yearly output is measured in gigawatt-hours (GWh). The facility, Northvolt Ett in Skelleftea, is expected to have a yearly output of 60 GWh.

The battery cell came off the production line at the gigafactory on Tuesday, Northvolt said.

“Of course, this first cell is only the beginning,” Peter Carlsson, co-founder and CEO of Northvolt, said in a statement.

“Over the course of the coming years, we look forward to Northvolt Ett expanding its production capacity greatly to enable the European transition to clean energy.”

The majority of the world’s electric car batteries are currently made in the U.S. and Asia, but Northvolt hopes to change this.

Despite being less than 6 years old, Northvolt has signed more than $30 billion worth of contracts with customers including carmakers BMW, Volkswagen, Volvo and Polestar.

Tesla has a pilot plant where it is trying to make its own battery cells but it currently uses batteries from CATL, Samsung, Panasonic and LG in its energy storage systems and vehicles.

Northvolt said commercial deliveries will begin in 2022, adding that production capacity will increase to 60 gigawatt-hours in the coming years, which is enough to supply batteries for around 1 million electric vehicles.

Peak Oil 2019? EVs going to knock the crap out of oil in the next 10 years..... 20 years........ 30 years ..........

There are 13 new battery cell gigafactories coming online in the US by 2025, according to the Department of Energy.

These factories are ushering in a new era of battery production in the US.

Aside from Tesla and Panasonic’s Gigafactory Nevada, which supplies battery cells for the production of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, there has been limited battery cell production in the US.

Asia – especially China, Japan, and South Korea – is where most battery cells for electric vehicles are coming from.

With more electric vehicle production coming to the US, it’s important that battery cell production also comes to the country, and several companies have made announcements to address the situation.

Now the Department of Energy has issued a report listing all the battery factory projects in the US:

“In addition to electric vehicle battery plants that are already in operation in the United States, 13 additional plants have been announced and are expected to be operational within the next 5 years. Of the 13 plants that are planned, eight are joint ventures between automakers and battery manufacturers. Many of these new plants will be located in the Southeast or Midwest.”

Here’s the full list published by the Department of Energy last week:

Manufacturer Location Expected Opening
Ford Northeast of Memphis, TN 2025
Ford & SK Innovation Central KY 2025
Ford & SK Innovation Central KY 2026
General Motors & LG Chem Lordstown, OH 2022
General Motors & LG Energy Solution Spring Hill, TN 2023
General Motors & LG Energy Solution To be determined (TBD) TBD
General Motors & LG Energy Solution TBD TBD
SK Innovation Northeast of Atlanta, GA 2022
SK Innovation Northeast of Atlanta, GA 2023
Stellantis & LG Energy Solution TBD 2024
Stellantis & Samsung SDI TBD 2025
Toyota Southeast of Greensboro, NC 2025
Volkswagen Chattanooga, TN TBD

It looks like they missed a few too.

For example, Tesla is currently deploying battery cell production capacity at its Gigafactory Texas in Austin.

It could become one of the biggest battery cell factories in the world, with a planned capacity of over 100 GWh.

Electrek’s Take

This is going to be a massive wave of battery cell production coming to the US that is essential to the new electric and battery-powered economy taking over several industries.

It’s also bringing a lot of good manufacturing jobs to the US, directly and indirectly.

With those factories, there are a number of associated needs, such as a supply chain of minerals necessary for the batteries.

It’s tough to quantify the impact of those 13+ new battery factories coming to the US in the next four years, but I think it’s going to be massive.

38 New EV Battery Gigafactories Planned In Europe

Originally posted on EVANNEX.
by Charles Morris

You can’t build EVs without batteries, as Elon Musk acknowledged years ago when he announced plans to build the first of Tesla’s Gigafactories (and coined a new word). Musk and others have estimated that the world will need several dozen battery gigafactories once EVs begin to be produced in serious volume.

It’s not just a question of volume—geography and politics also come into play. At the moment, most of the world’s EV battery production is in Asia—an untenable situation for governments in North America and Europe that want to promote EV adoption and create green jobs. And of course, it makes environmental sense to produce batteries as near as possible to where the vehicles will be produced and sold.

So, the world will be getting a lot more gigafactories (and the word will be losing its capitalization). The scene is really heating up in Europe, where government and industry have mounted a major push to produce batteries domestically. According to a new report from the non-profit Transport & Environment (via The Next Web), as of May 2021, there were 38 battery gigafactories being built or planned in Europe and the UK.

EV sales are poised for grand global growth, and as T&E reports, Europe’s strong domestic EV market, a pre-existing industrial base and high environmental standards put the Continent in the catbird seat to capture a healthy slice of the market.

A look at some of the battery gigafactories in the works all across Germany (YouTube: Germany Trade & Invest)

“Battery investments are booming thanks largely to the rapidly growing electric vehicle sales seen across Europe in 2020/21, closely mirroring regulatory requirements, notably the EU car CO2 standards,” says T&E. In 2020 T&E predicted Volkswagen would sell 9.6% EVs in order to hit its CO2 goals. The final sales share was 9.7%.

Of the 38 projects in the pipeline, 17 have secured funding so far, representing approximately $30 billion of total investment. Ten other projects, representing another $16.8 billion, have secured partial financing, and 11 more gigafactories have recently been announced, but have not confirmed financing.

Several national-flagged projects are underway—companies planning plants under public/private partnerships include Verkor in France, Britishvolt in the UK, Italvolt in Italy, Basquevolt-Nabatt in Spain, and Freyr in Norway. Not only European companies have benefitted from the largesse — Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory received some $1.4 billion in German federal and state support.

If all 38 gigafactories make it to production, they could be delivering as much as 462 GWh worth of battery cells by 2025, and 1,144 GWh by 2030, enough to power over 90% of expected new vehicle sales in that year. According to Transport & Environment’s analysis, this would give Europe a 20% market share of global cell production by 2025, making it second only to China.

That’s not what your comment said. It specifically referenced flaring in Houston.  However with respect to light pollution caused by flaring in the Permian basin, yes it’s a lot.  However the amount of light from flaring and the amount of gas from it are very poorly correlated.  Light is from the surface area of the flame, but the amount being burned is a function of the volume of the flame, and the pressure and geometry of the gas at the burner tips, and how quickly it contacts enough oxygen to burn.  You cannot determine how much fuel is being burned by the light emitted - at all.  Estimates calculated in that way are often off by a factor of 100 for ‘wild guesses’ and still off by a factor of 10 even when some calibrating data is included.

There IS quite significant flaring in the Permian related to ongoing production and some 95% of the gas burned in those flares IS needless waste.  My point was it’s much better now than it was even a few years ago.
