Did analysts overlook the grim situation in the world's sixth largest oil producer, with the focus firmly on Saudi-UAE spat?

Iraq oil sector

The suicide bomber that killed over 35, injuring over 60 hapless people on the eve of a major Islamic festival reminds us of the bad old days of the ISIS, which claimed the responsibility for the carnage.

With the US showing no enthusiasm for getting involved in what the Biden Administration calls, ‘for-ever-wars’, the ISIS seems to have been emboldened by new ground realities to expand its influence across the country.

Iraqi government, mainly led by the Shite Muslims, has inadvertently created a perfect, fertile ground for the ISIS, consisting Sunni Muslims, to grow and expand on the grounds of rampant discrimination against the latter; a combination of nepotism, corruption and sheer incompetence hardly helps confronting an existential threat.

If it gets any worse, there will be a fierce competition to get hold of the oil fields across the country; the ISIS managed to do it before and enrich its coffers at the expense of the revenue that the government is supposed to earn.

Even in the worst case scenario, the global supply of crude oil will not be under substantial threat. It, however, can add an unnecessary additional factor to the global oil equation – to give it an equally unnecessary jolt, in addition to creating supply chaos for the world’s third largest oil consumer, India.
