Meredith Poor + 895 MP September 22, 2021 China enacted their 'one child policy' in 1979 - with enforcement beginning in 1980. Somehow, however, the Chinese population grew by 100 million in each census from 1990 to 2020. How exactly does the population grow when each woman can only have one child? One implication of this is that a lot of the CCPs edicts are useless rhetoric, in the real world things are governed by local bureaucrats. Time and time again the party has mandated one thing or another and the local party officials have told the central government whatever they want to hear in order to get their money. Some of the comments coming from Xi Jinping and other senior officials suggest that the CCP is hopelessly out of touch. A 'Margaret Thatcher ministerial revolt' is imminent.
ronwagn + 6,290 September 23, 2021 Xi seems to have total control in China through the CCP. On the other hand, he is rapidly trying to totally change a very huge country with a billion people. That is a lot of inertia. The Chinese people do have a mind of their own. The CCP is not a homogeneous group but it must appear to follow the party line or risk being targeted, kicked out of the party, eliminated, or imprisoned. The many billionaires and millionaires are not powerless until individually made so, creating more enemies. By toppling the status quo Xi is in danger of being toppled himself or toppling China economically. His tactics, including COVID, have created an anti-Chinese world. Xi has now stated that he will turn the economy inward and help the poor majority with a Robin Hood approach. My guess is that the wealthy and middle class are not able or totally in line with that goal. Xi could start a small or large war to strengthen his control but could also be overthrown in that situation. We live in "interesting times."

Boat + 1,323 RG October 7, 2021 China and Russia are different types of powers. Multiple regions, religions, traditions, cultures, languages etc. Their authoritative governments have to use blunt power to stay between the ditches. The US for the most part has one language and is much more seamless. The main US strength is ease of trade with and the rule of law driving consistency and less disruption. Even when an ex president and his party try a power grab and coup it did not result in massive disruption like say in Venezuela or Turkey. The courts did not support the insurrection and we’re going into the light punishment phase rather than executions and prison that might happen elsewhere. Far to much leveraging going on. Until taxes by the wealthy/ corporations, are paid and government becomes much more transparent there will be little change and balance. What has stayed the same is the largest corporations still have the most policy advantage. The losers of elections lose policy advantage. Of course the “end is here” is typical rhetoric by the losers. What will be interesting is outside business. The volatile abortion issue is like a big zit that looks like it’s gonna be popped. To many this is bigger than Trump. This is bigger than Democrat and Republican. COVID introduced vaccines for the good of the group vrs I decide what’s good for my body, screw the health risks of the group. No matter the outcome of these issues there will be plenty of fundamental disagreement. Will government wish to control an insurrection in the US like in China? Or just jail a few leaders of the opposition like in Russia? Is the current US response weak or woke. Biden has been playing softball while Trump attempts to lob in hand grenades. Will Trump end up in a cage in court or will Trump be allowed to run again.
