France Banning Oil in 2040

France passed an much expected law that bans oil and gas exploration by the year 2040--round about when oil is expected to reach peak demand. I'd say "conveniently", but the most convenient thing about the ban is that they barely produce anything.

Do I detect a bit of 'freedom fry' sentiment here?  Largely, I agree. It's not like Saudi Arabia banning oil and gas production, but even the Saudis are seriously diversifying. Still, I think it's pretty much a non-law sort of law. It's more like a guess at where the market is going to be in 2040. It's just candy for the public and political showmanship.
