Coal Set For Record Highs In 2022 Despite Net-Zero Pledges

Recommended Posts

The economic rebound from the pandemic is taking coal power generation to a new record high this year, with global coal demand likely hitting another new high next year, undermining net-zero efforts, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its annual Coal 2021 report released on Friday.

There seem to be several distinct responses to the endless talk about exiting coal powered generation - parts of the developed world (UK, Germany and so on) are doing their best and sometimes achieving something. Then there are the undeveloped, mostly authoritarian, nations which may say they are in favour of exiting coal but obviously aren't serious such as China, Russia, India and Brazil (yes, I know the last two are democracies). China, in particular, is driving the growth of the coal market. Then there are the developed countries which say they want to do something and then forget anything was said (South Korea and maybe Japan). There are also countries that don't need coal much to begin with (Norway, New Zealand). All this adds up to a lot of disappointment to those who were hoping to an end to the use of coal.
