A Graphite Shortage Could Derail The EV Boom

Recommended Posts

WTF?

Capture CO2 out of the air, 'electrolyze' it to make CO (Carbon Monoxide), let it sit in an airtight tank at room temperature, and it spontaneously converts to CO2 and graphite. Anyone that needs graphite can pretty much make it out of 'thin air'. Any analyst that is proclaiming that there is a 'shortage' of graphite should be sent back to nursery school.

MP - I think there has been some confusion over the type of graphite. Note this article the graphite required occurs naturally. It must be difficult to make. I didn't know that there are different types of graphite until I looked..

WTH?

You can make gold in a nuclear reactor, just need mercury... Or you can mine it...

Hint for ivory tower ignorants, Graphite is mined... Not "created"

Do you DO anything, or just sit in your ivory tower and pretend to be a chemist?

graphite can be mined OR manufactured.  Mined graphite is preferred at the moment because cheap labor in China makes it the lowest cost.  However graphite can be manufactured to meet specifications from coal, or from petroleum coke, and with the correct specifications for EV production, and it has been done in the past - it just depends on how cheap the feedstock is compared to the cost of chinese mined graphite.  https://www.televisory.com/blogs/-/blogs/can-lithium-ion-anode-demand-for-needle-coke-reduce-availability-for-electrode-players-

Although using a fossil fuel source of any kind will rile up the Green extremists and invite legal bans against the source...just reality.

That is mined.

Mr. Ivory tower is proposing making graphite from the 🙄AIR🤣.. + heat...  as if that is even close to economic reality

Since you seem to be an expert on economic reality, what is the difference in cost? Where are you getting your information?

Again, as we discussed in a different thread.  It's not a fossil fuel source for this purpose.  It's a source of raw materials.  I mean, you can burn mined graphite just like coal too (it's pure carbon).  It's just that it's special physical properties make it to valuable to use in that way most of the time.

That's my point - it's not worth trying to do.  There are literally billions of tons a year of petroleum coke and good quality coal mined or produced as byproducts every year.  We will use these before resorting to esoteric chemical conversion processes to get graphite.

Yea we don't have facilities that do this, and we won't build them because it doesn't make any sense financially.

Also, there's an EV boom?
