damirUSBiH + 327 DD June 18, 2018 Greece has reached a deal on the name of its northern neighbour, which called itself Macedonia at the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. After 27 years of talks - and many protests - they have settled on the name Republic of North Macedonia, or Severna Makedonija in Macedonian.Greece had objected to the name Macedonia, fearing territorial claims on its eponymous northern region. It had vetoed the neighbour's bid to join Nato and the European Union. The new name will now need to be approved by the Macedonian people and Greek parliament. jpZelabal + 63 jj June 18, 2018 Things are not so simple, I know that many people from Macedonia think this is a totally capitulation for the Macedonians...
ThunderBlade + 231 TB June 18, 2018 The whole world will keep on calling it Macedonia just like East Luxemburg never caught on. Greece now looks like the man who is not confident of his skills and needs to bully another man to prove how different he is.
damirUSBiH + 327 DD June 18, 2018 Regardless of who the name originally belongs to is irrelevant in the modern world and inhumane move. If Greeks have to revoke a country's name to establish superiority that only demonstrates that they are beneath them... as well as the prime minister who sold off the name. Pavel + 384 PP June 18, 2018 Hopefully the Greeks don't go around calling it the North of Macedonia and painting over road signs!
TraderTate + 186 TS June 19, 2018 For Greece, though, this is about money. Signing this is hope that the IMF/WB will be more ... amenable.
