damirUSBiH + 327 DD July 20, 2018 Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday she was right to say a year ago that Europe could no longer rely on the United States to impose order on the world, and that it needed to take matters close to home into its own hands. “We can’t rely on the superpower of the United States,” Merkel told a news conference in Berlin. Cold - warm, it's the best comparison for relations between Germany and U.S.
Pavel + 384 PP July 20, 2018 So, if the US abdicates it’s role as a world power and walks away from its defense obligations under NATO, is it likely that the EU or individual countries will pursue or expand nuclear weapons programs.... Of course, Germany has to pay share for NATO:)
ThunderBlade + 231 TB July 20, 2018 Angela MerkeI has been Chancellor of German since 2005 in which time Germany has contributed so little toward ‘World Order’! John Foote + 1,135 JF July 23, 2018 Shortly after Trump was elected I went on a camping trip with three ambassadors from EU countries. They were united in stating what Merkel has stated, and most everyone has known since the election of Trump. Bless her forthright nature. Western Europe used to being led by the US, and they have know idea how to lead themselves (no one from France or Germany in the group). This is partly by US design, although a post WW2 relic. As far as defense costs, perhaps Germany pays the right amount, or close to it, the US spends way, way, way, too much, blinding us to more sensible solutions. The old when you have a giant hammer, everything is a nail. Nobody is going to invade the USA. Nobody is going to invade Germany. It's the Eastern European countries who entered the NATO fold that perhaps at risk for Russian vassal state status. These ambassadors' bigger concern was how the French election would go, and the French embrace right nationalism, which would be the end of the EU. Brexit didn't really matter that much to them, as they put it "England at it's heart is always an island nation." I'd love to have Germany's level of domestic violence, compared to the USA levels. 1
