rainman + 263 July 31, 2018 The European Union has imposed asset freezes on six Russian firms for their involvement in the construction of a new road-and-rail bridge linking Russia to the annexed Crimean peninsula, which the bloc says is illegal. Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 after Ukraine’s pro-Russian president was toppled in an uprising. The West condemned the seizure as an illegal annexation and imposed sanctions on Moscow. damirUSBiH + 327 DD July 31, 2018 Seems fair to me. Russia illegally annexed the Ukrainian Crimea.
Petar + 76 PP July 31, 2018 As I know, firms from Russia are not the only one in this job. Do they sanction EU companies which help to build that illegal structure?
ThunderBlade + 231 TB July 31, 2018 Yep. Six days ago, U.S. announced the declaration on the Crimea and it's a strong message against Russia’s illegal annexation.
50 shades of black + 254 July 31, 2018 Until now, sanctions as this one, haven't done enough to stop the Moscow. EU and allies must to have and propose a plan of action to increase Western leverage over Vlad Putin and Russia.
Tomasz + 1,608 July 31, 2018 (edited) Dont try to move NATo eastward and organize revolutions near Russia border and everything will be fine. For me broken agreement with Gorbachov made 30 years ago is the biggest threat to peace in Europe. Edited July 31, 2018 by Tomasz
WaytoPeace + 62 PC July 31, 2018 Granted, the West, at least, recognized the borders of Ukraine after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. However, one should bear in mind the fact that those borders were not that meaningful before that as almost everything was controlled by the heirarchy of the Soviet Union. There was no reason for the heirarchy to divide the “country of Ukraine” into two based upon ethnic and political considerations, as ultimately occurred with our blessing following the dissolution in the case of Yugoslavia. Why not allow the people who reside in Crimea and the eastern provinces decide whether they wish to be part of Ukraine, independent or part of Russia? By all accounts, the people in Crimea have already done so, but I see no reason why they would be unwilling to vote again. In fact, Putin already offerred to do this, and Trump didn’t think it was such a bad idea, until later. Comsider, if the Soviet Union still existed and the western provinces had pushed out the Soviet forces with our assistance, wouldn’t we be demanding that they should be given the same right of self determination with the vote monitored by the United Nations? Don’t we believe in the right of self determination? Isn’t this a basis for our American revolution? The alternative is a long term imposition of sanctions and retaliations that will not change the facts on the ground.
