Marina Schwarz + 1,576 August 13, 2018 Algeria is not an oil producer we hear a lot about but it seems set on boosting its oil (and gas) production. Could it become a factor to be reckoned with on a global level?

Possibly, if Algeria can do something about its (alleged) corrosive corruption. A rise in African oil production would be good for global economies, as more and more new oil needs to be found to replace decling oil fields around the world. The expected tightening global spare oil capacity by 2019 could probably be alleviated at least a tiny bit by an increase in Algerian oil production.
Guillaume Albasini + 851 August 13, 2018 Algeria has more gas than oil. Oil and gas reserves are in the south of the country, in the desert where there are still some security concerns due to the presence of jihadist terrorist groups in the region and the instability of neighbouring countries (Libya, Mali...). Algeria is said to have huge shale reserves but I doubt the indebtment scheme that has allowed the US shale revolutiom could be replicated elsewhere. And shale oil extraction  needs huge amounts of water ... not easy to find in the desert.
Marina Schwarz + 1,576 August 13, 2018 Ah, yes, this shale thing can't work everywhere, definitely.
