The U.S. wants Iran’s oil exports to drop to zero, according to a recent statement by National Security Advisor John Bolton. The question is: can the U.S. pull it off?

I agree.  They have been making rather uncharacteristic public displays of what are normally internal, quiet, political dealings.  It would seem that something is either about to give, or they will come out very soon with renewed support for "good" leadership in times of great external pressure.

A drop to zero exports is unrealistic. I consider it would be perhaps a 50% drop at the end of the year followed by an increase of exports in 2019 when new ways to circumvent the sanctions will emerge. 

The impact of the sanctions will also depend on the oil market mood. With a bearish market the blow could be harder for Iran than with a thight bullish market.
