California's Reliance on Saudi Arabia and OPEC Grows

Recommended Posts

Mirth.  California is the gift that just keeps giving giggles about Correct Thinkingness absurdity.

‘GREEN’ CALIFORNIA IS MORE RELIANT ON FOREIGN OIL THAN EVER BEFORE

  • California’s biggest source of crude oil imports is now Saudi Arabia with more than 98 million barrels in 2017.
  • Environmentalists want Gov. Jerry Brown to stop issuing new oil and gas leases.
  • However, that will only make California more reliant on foreign countries.

There’s a growing call for California Gov. Jerry Brown to stop issuing oil and natural gas leases in the state, with some even arguing that all state fossil fuel production should be shuttered.

Yet continuing the current trend of dwindling in-state crude production wouldn’t mean California stops using oil. The state, ranked as one of the “greenest” in the country, would still use lots of oil, it would just come from other countries.

In fact, more than 56 percent of the crude oil received by California refineries were extracted in foreign countries, according to California Energy Commission data. California, once the third-largest oil state, is now more reliant than ever on foreign oil.

The biggest share of California’s oil imports come from Saudi Arabia, which makes up 29 percent of foreign crude flowing into the state. More than 70 percent of foreign oil imports to the state come from OPEC members, including Iraq, Kuwait and Ecuador.

Great article. Having grown up in California and a frequent visitor it is obvious that all trucks should be burning natural gas Both CNG and LNG. Since the leftist greenies have labeled natural gas as a carbon fuel put in the same category as coal it has been shunned. Yet they continue to burn it on their household gas ranges and to heat their homes. It also produces most of their power and is increasing its share. Green extremism is really harming life in California. They have even mandated solar panels on new homes while California already has the most expensive real estate in the USA. It also has the most expensive mainland gasoline and diesel.

I lived 3 years in Southern California.  It's its own little universe, with, erm, a unique mindset.

Are californians mental? Why do they oppose the offshore oil production if their economy is so highly dependent on imported oil? The greenies and other crazies have a dominant say here. These greenies are agents of some other forces. How else can they get so much money for media coverage and campaign? Greenies essentially do no useful work and yet appear to have lots of money to speak loudly and that is very suspicious. California may end up causing great danger to entire USA as a whole by being insane

Maybe the 'leftist Greens'. Eco-pragmatic greens are generally quite supportive of proposals to switch trucks and buses to using CNG, ideally combined with Hybrid tech for the buses.

The same thing could be said of Florida but that would be the rightist, so nobody seems to mention it

Nick W, I know there are some realistic greens but they are not the Democrats in control of California. They do have gave lots of CNG buses and Garbage trucks, but not many semis at all.

I live in California and would love to see more drilling, both onshore and offshore.

Under Trump, the Bureau of Land Management is proposing opening up 1.6 million acres of land for drilling and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is proposing opening up the federal waters offshore California for drilling.

The democrats want to prevent new oil infrastructure from being built in state waters to prevent Trump from opening up new drilling in federal waters.

Being that the entirety of the Vandenberg Air Force Base would be open for drilling and is located on the coast, do those first three miles of water offshore the base belong to the state or the feds?  I would love to see them build infrastructure directly to Vandenberg and watch the leftists blow a gasket.

As someone from the San Francisco Bay Area, I am thankful for Reabold Resources, a small company based in London, UK that has chosen to invest in Californian oil and gas both within the Bay Area and just outside of it.  Their three projects include oil in West Brentwood, Contra Costa County, gas in Grizzly Island, Solano County, and oil in Monroe Swells, Merced County.  I truly hope they become successful and expand their operations.

Of course, the crazies want to keep all the oil in the ground, but what if drilling for oil actually reduced the amount of carbon in the atmosphere?

That’s right!  Carbon-negative oil, being drilled right here in Monterey County, California.
