Mercedes is not trying to take on Tesla. They just don't have the batteries. This simply an attempt to keep loyal customers from defecting. They can only get enough batteries for a production of a few tens of thousands of electric cars a year for at least the next few years. Tesla is planning on producing over a million in the same time period. BYD even more. Until world wide battery production ramps up over the next few years (4+), only Tesla and BYD will make BEVs in quantity with no substantial competition.
