EU electric vehicle sales jump 71% helped by subsidies

Sales of EVs and hybrid cars - which have both a battery and combustion engine - have soared in the bloc in the last three years, boosted by government subsidies and corporate fleets looking for low- or zero-emission vehicle options.

EV sales collapse as subsidies and tax credits come to an abrupt halt

posted by AJOT | Mar 01 2023 at 11:45 AM

The global electric vehicle (EV) market is reeling from one of the most dramatic collapses in monthly sales to date, with Rystad Energy research showing that only 672,000 units were sold in January, almost half of December 2022 sales and a mere 3% year-on-year increase over January 2022. The EV market share among all passenger car sales also tumbled to 14% in January, well down on the 23% seen in December.

OK, I agree that VW might become competitive but are you saying it is now? I am looking from the U.S. point of view. Will China ever be allowed to compete in the West?

I think the EU will allow China imports but only if the import duty is astronomical so they dont have a competitive edge on domestic auto manufacturers.

I'm not sure VW will ever be that competitive as they are very late to the party, BMW are well ahead of them in Europe. However as they own Audi and Porsche they could well get in on the more luxury side of BEV's

You can buy these now if youre loaded

Oh Mr. Plant perhaps you may want to reflect but only for a moment. There is no market for mass EV transportation..none. The EU attempted to cutoff the incentive capital and the EV demand utterly crashed. I can assure VW made contact with the powers that be and demanded the spigot be turned back on. Or face down the collapse of automotive mfg in the EU.

While I am not sure you aware of the precarious position the EU is in, let me point out a conflict that almost defies any sense of decorum.   France's president Macron recently confronted a US congressman, the subject US tax dollars going to the EU GREEN energy debacle  Can anyone grasp a foreign leader demanding capital from another country to address there malfeasance. A world gone mad.

You’re hurting my country’: Manchin faces Europe’s wrath

The West Virginia senator is pushing Europeans to stop worrying and love the Inflation Reduction Act.

DAVOS, Switzerland — When French President Emmanuel Macron visited Washington late last year, he hunted down the key architect of the new American trade and energy policies he loathed.

On the eve of a state dinner at the White House, Macron confronted Sen. Joe Manchin, the West Virginia Democrat, with a blunt accusation.

Crisis mode

EU officials are now scrambling to find some way out of the conundrum inflicted on them by the IRA, particularly the bill’s provisions on electric vehicles, which gave favorable treatment to Mexico and Canada, but not the EU. A leader of an EU country, who didn’t want to be named, said this week that, “We are confident that by raising it we can make sure the U.S. does the right thing.”

The European Commission established a “task-force” in October led by Von der Leyen’s chief of staff Bjoern Seibert and deputy national security adviser Mike Pyle to explore options. In particular, they are trying to ensure that the local provisions part of the law which allows manufacturers from Mexico and Canada to benefit from tax breaks, could also apply to Europe.

My wealthy sister in Oregon bought a electric Porsche a year ago. We could buy 3 or 4 ICE vehicles that are just fine for the same price. Better seating also.

ICE Porsches are expensive too, the cost has nothing to do with being ICE versus EV.  They are not meant to be practical either.

My wealthy sister???

no trailer hitches on hearses .........obviously you have not convinced her what is hers is yours......

charm her?

Voodoo?

cry poverty?

Pray for her to give you one?

or just be happy that you are alive and have a car........and do not worry that some have money to waste

You can also buy 3 VW all electric AWD ID4's for the same price of one electric AWD Porsche

my money is on a practical reasonable priced AWD ID4 after tax credits under $40000

The Porsche looks like a warmed over Karmann Ghia...the little emblem on the hood is not worth the extra $100,000

VW screwed up bad recently with their ICE cars too.

The auto industry has historically been unstable, EVs are not to blame.

Oh EWS try opening your eyes and also look at current sales figures, you only seem to be able to look at the continent of N.America not a global perspective.

China’s EV sales to exceed 8 million units by end of 2023

So the 8 million EV's that will be on the road in China arent "for actual consumer use" are you serious????

Do you honestly think they are making them for fun or to look "green"?

And I'm the one who has to wake up lol, unbelievable!

Yes. The CCP wants China to look great, not be great. All they are interested in is power. Parking 6 million of those cars in fields to rot is normal for them.

Anybody who thinks more than 2 million will actually be driven is a naïve fool.

He brings up two interesting points.

  1. Many car trips are off the beaten paths (US Highway System). Most of the time I enjoy going down I-29 - no problem. But, in spring and fall, I like to go down highway 77, but I have to drive my ICE car. I could drive the 45 minutes each way to I29 to charge, but that is a waste of time. If you are between I-70 and I-80, you best have an ICE car.

  2. Having 40 fast chargers at a stop seems like a lot. If you have to wait 20 minutes, how many cars would be filled at a gas station? 50-60 is a minimum at a typical 12 pump station. So, you end up at a slow charge station if they have any. Or, you simply wait as cars stack up.

Really????

Tailingspond already debunked that ridiculous claim from some dodgy journalist.

6 million in a field 🤣🤣 thats 1 very large field my friend. in 1 acre you can park approx. 172 cars so I reckon approx. 34,884 acres needed.

https://math.answers.com/questions/How_many_cars_can_you_park_on_one_acre_with_no_space

Or if you like 41 central parks! 141Km2! lol

I reckon if that had happened it would definitely be newsworthy, dont ya think!

Rather than some tw*t reporter trying to claim something that its not.

Ahh yes naiivety isnt it amazing!

It is illegal to publish bad news about China in China, they don't allow independent journalists in China. most publications outside of China are paid shills, Youtubr, etc are by paid shills.

Yup, just like the 50 million unused apartments the Chinese built. Now, Evergrande, the biggest financier, declared bankruptcy, yesterday as many of the smaller ones already have.. These Ghost Cities are being demolished before they fall down on there own. All the Chinese people who invested are SOL.
