Why Norway — the poster child for electric cars — is having second thoughts

The mistake is to think that EVs solve all your problems when it comes to transport,” said Ruohonen, the Oslo mayoral adviser. “They don’t.”

What is wrong with car dependence???

I dont get the problem at all.

I have travelled extensively around Norway (Bergen to Oslo around the coast) and there is no viable economic public transport option due to its geography. whether its ICE cars or EV's just what is the problem in owning a car?????

Did you read it?  It's not like they want to go back to ICE cars, or that EV's don't work.  The concern here is that EV's make people less likely to give up their cars altogether and reduces investment in public transport.  EV's are too good! lol

EV sales have now expanded for 13 straight quarters. Electric vehicles accounted for 7.9% of total US auto sales in Q3, up from 6.1% a year ago and 7.2% in Q2. EV sales surged 49.8% compared to last year, increasing 5% from the 298,039 sold in Q2.Oct 12, 2023

Ya Don't Say...

Ambition meets reality

Some of those newly toned-down plans include:

  • Ford pausing $12 billion in new EV factory spending due to slower customer demand;
  • GM pushing back production launches of its slate of electric trucks and SUVs, including the Chevy Silverado and Equinox EVs, as well as the GMC Sierra Denali EV;
  • The company is also pushing EV truck production at its Orion facility, which was supposed to start next year, until late 2025;
  • Honda and GM cancel their plans to jointly develop a slate of affordable EVs, arguing they couldn’t make the math work;
  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk wringing his hands over interest rates for almost an entire earnings call, while also appearing to dial back plans to build a new factory in Mexico;
  • Speaking of Tesla, the EV leader’s profit margins hit a four-year low in the third quarter of this year, as the company continues to navigate the price war it started;
  • Hertz, admitting that its newly purchased EVs are twice as expensive to fix as its gas cars, is slimming down its EV plans;
  • Citing subsidies and competition from China, Volkswagen said it would stop making two of its flagship EVs, the ID.3 and Cupra’s Born.

It’s gotten so bad, that now even notorious EV skeptic (and former CEO of Toyota) Akio Toyoda is going around basically being like “I told you so.”

And yet EV sales are still rocketing

Boo hoo some of the big manufacturers are belly aching that their profit margins are reduced, surely that's a good thing for the consumer with increased competition!

Ford and GM are very late to the party so to catch up tech wise and gain market share for them is going to be very difficult. The Mustang Mach e has decent sales numbers though.

VW, BMW, Tesla, BYD, Mercedes, Volvo, Polestar, SEAT, Nissan, Renault, Citroen are all miles ahead of them even Toyota are very late to join in the fun.

I expect to see many job cuts at auto manufactures.  The majority of auto workers have recently negotiated rather large pay raises.  This will put pressure on the company to reduce staff size and increase automation.

Tesla recently turned a 70 piece item into two, soon to be one.

EVs Take 24.9% Of The UK – BMW Top Brand

October saw plugin EVs take 24.9% of the UK auto market, up from 21.5% year on year. Plugin hybrids had their strongest share in two years. Overall auto volume was 153,529 units, up 14.3% YoY, and in line with pre-2020 seasonal averages. BMW was October’s leading BEV brand.

EVs take 24.9% of the UK

October’s combined plugin market share of 24.9% comprised 15.6% full battery electrics (BEVs), and 9.3% plugin hybrids (PHEVs). These compare to August 2022 figures of 21.5% combined, with 14.8% BEV, and 6.6% PHEV. The PHEV category has evidently seen a recovery, not due to generous incentives, but due to the new generation of improved PHEVs which offer 50+ miles of electric range. BEVs saw rather marginal YoY growth in share in October.

In volume terms, however, BEVs grew by 20.1% YoY, to 23,943 units. PHEVs grew by 60.5%, to 14,285 units. Looking at 2023 as a whole, BEVs have grown 34.2% YTD, to 262,484 units (and taken 16.3% share YTD). PHEVs have grown by 36.7% to 113,278 units (7.1% share YTD). Even for BEVs, that rate of growth results in almost doubling volume every two years. Not too bad, when you step back.

my driving habits and just about everyone I know would be considered drivers in an Island nation......if the trip is over 500 miles I fly....Longest trips we drove in the past 10 years........160 miles one way...number of driven trips over 100 miles in a day.......2........number of flights .......(all over 500 miles one way)........at least 70 .........

rental vehicles.....2 evs in the last year after long haul flights......no problems ......getting charged up when needed.....in rural US...even rural ( and I mean rural) gas stations are getting chargers

EVs are not just for island nations...........If I had to drive over 1000 miles and had 2 evs in the garage..........rental agency.......

plans for driving long trips over 500 miles ....none

time is more valuable than driving long trips.........

for those that make frequent long drives......hybrid

straight ICE vehicles ...........dinosaurs .......extinction is happening now........

Hybrids and EVs will be the majority of vehicles on the roads in 10 years

no reason for any automaker to make at the minimum all vehicles Hybrids........they just make sense in much better gas mileage if one does not want a full EV

Cash for Clunkers will happen again............next big recession........

Car makers love government bailouts and incentive to buy new vehicles

Cash for clunkers last time

Watchdog Calls for Investigation into Biden Official Behind Electric Vehicle Push

The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) inspector general has been called on to investigate a top official in Democrat President Biden’s administration who has been leading the push to force Americans into switching to electric vehicles (EVs).

A complaint was filed by watchdog Protect the Public’s Trust against Ann Carlson, acting administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

In a Monday letter to DOT Inspector General Eric Soskin, the watchdog alleges that Biden violated the Federal Vacancies Reform Act (FVRA) when he appointed Carlson.

The FVRA stipulates that the president cannot appoint an acting officer to a position if the individual did not serve for at least 90 days as the chief assistant to the vacant job or if the president submits their nomination to the Senate for an appointment during the 365 days before the vacancy arising.

The alleged violations of these clauses would mean that Carlson’s appointment was illegal.

According to the letter, that any actions Carlson has taken in the role “shall have no force or effect.”

Carlson, formerly chief counsel for the agency, had served as acting administrator of NHTSA since September 2022.

She assumed the role upon the resignation of the former administrator, according to the White House.

In February 2023, Biden announced that he would nominate Carlson to run the agency permanently.

However, Senate Republicans tanked her nomination, largely because of her previous statements about using high energy prices as a launching pad to advance the globalist green agenda.

Her other comments have also indicated Carlson’s support for hardline climate policy.

The pushback forced Biden to withdraw Carlson’s nomination in May.

Since the withdrawal, she has remained in the post on an acting basis and oversaw the agency’s proposed updates to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards in July.

The updates would drive up automobile costs and amount to an “EV mandate,” Dan Kish, a senior research fellow for the Institute for Energy Research, previously warned.

“This is becoming standard procedure when the people, through their Senators, reject Biden administration nominees over concerns about experience, activism, and conflicts of interest,” Michael Chamberlain, director of Protect the Public’s Trust, said in a statement.

“That the administration has taken a similar tack with one of Secretary Buttigieg’s top deputies, Ms. Carlson, it appears that yet again the self-proclaimed most ethical administration in history has placed its agenda above constitutional checks and balances.

“This is not the way to restore trust in the federal government.”

NHTSA’s core mission is “to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce economic costs due to road traffic crashes, through education, research, safety standards, and enforcement,” according to the agency’s website.

Carlson had no distinct prior career experience pertaining directly to the automobile industry or traffic safety before her work for NHTSA, according to Protect the Public’s Trust.

She is one of several officials that the White House has managed to wriggle into influential bureaucratic posts despite their failure to clear the Senate confirmation process.

“Presidential nominees must earn their positions through constitutionally sanctioned procedures, not through back-door attempts to thwart the separation of powers in an effort to enact an administration’s preferred policy outcomes,” the complaint reads.

“The Office of Inspector General should immediately investigate these violations of the Federal Vacancies Reform Act and prevent Ms. Carlson from engaging in any further ultra vires activities.”

Ron being an island makes no difference at all. Its all to do with infrastructure build out. Most people charge their EV's at night (cheaper and its just convenient to do so) or when they're at work. Its rare someone will drive 250+ miles in a day (average EV battery distance) and I would say the same applies to the average American as per this survey which says 25.9 miles.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1007157/us-daily-miles-per-driver/

I can't imagine much has changed since this survey in 2017 and the trend is coming downwards.

If these numbers are correct then the average hybrid will get you wherever youre going each day just using the battery, let alone an EV.

Population density and commuting distances make a big difference between Americans and most Europeans. I just got back from an 8,000 mile vacation. It is hard to have a lot of EV charging infrastructure along Route 66, from Los Angeles to Seattle, and Seattle to Illinois.

Vacations are not commutes so that is not a logical comparison.

They have gas stations everywhere and a charging station is much cheaper, easier to build and requires no employees.   Easy.

The Tran-Canada highway is fully electrified and is a very long road.

So what you see as difficult is just small mindedness / conservative attachment to the past.

hotels typically let you charge for free...............

Top 5 Hotel Chains That Currently Offer EV Charging

As of right now, some of the biggest hotel chains in the world have committed to ensuring their locations have EV charging options for their guests. These numbers continue to rise, but luckily, you can find at least a few popular chains with EV chargers readily available for many people.

1. Holiday Inn

Holiday Inn leads the charge when it comes to installing electric vehicle chargers at their locations across the globe. This hospitality company has already installed electric vehicle chargers at nearly 800 locations worldwide. In 2018, Holiday Inn announced they were adding an additional 5,000 EV charging stations in Europe thanks to the generous donations from Volkswagen.

2. Hilton

At Hilton hotels, they’ve also hopped on board and offer four different types of charging stations: the Tesla wall-charging unit (only compatible with Tesla cars), GE WattStation, DuraStation brands (universal chargers), and EV Connect. Hilton’s continued partnership with GE will only continue to thrive and expand to their entire hotel catalog, which is vital to keeping up with their sustainable customer base.

hilton hotel chain; hotels with ev charging

3. Best Western

Dominic Speno, Owner of Best Western Plus Villa Del Lago in California, said in 2015 that “Installing ChargePoint smart EV charging stations not only attracts new customers but also helps us achieve our own sustainability goals in addition to supporting those of our guests. ChargePoint smart chargers have made my hotel a more attractive destination for EV drivers, boosted our brand as a leader in green initiatives, and helped us achieve excellent reviews on reputed portals like TripAdvisor.com.”

This is just one small piece of the sustainable pie that has led to thousands of EV chargers being installed at Best Western hotels across the country in the last five years.

4. Marriott

At Marriott hotels, guests are accommodated with accessible, fast EV charging stations. As of right now, there are more than 3,137 charging stations for electric vehicles at these hotels. The “Level 2” charging stations can now be used by guests to charge their EVs at these hotels. Most Marriott locations offer this as a free service, although fees may be charged at some locations.

5. Radisson

Radisson hotels have partnered with Tesla to bring convenient, fast-charging to their Tesla-owning guests. It is unclear whether they are expanding to other brands or versions of EV chargers, but for right now, guests can charge at any Destination Charger for free. Also, some locations will have charging options for EVs that use the Type 2 inlet. Call ahead to be sure!
