Meredith Poor + 894 MP June 6 https://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/electrified-charcoal-sponge-can-soak-up-co2-directly-from-the-air Quote The team used a battery-like charging process to charge an inexpensive activated charcoal cloth with hydroxide ions. In this process, the cloth essentially acts like an electrode in a battery, and hydroxide ions accumulate in the tiny pores of the charcoal. At the end of the charging process, the charcoal is removed from the 'battery', washed and dried. Tests of the charged charcoal sponge showed that it could successfully capture CO2 directly from the air, thanks to the bonding mechanism of the hydroxides. 'It’s a new way to make materials, using a battery-like process,' said Forse. 'And the rates of CO2 capture are already comparable to incumbent materials. But what’s even more promising is this method could be far less energy-intensive, since we don’t require high temperatures to collect the CO2 and regenerate the charcoal sponge.' So, they quantified it, erm... Ok. Its not like everyone did not already know that activated charcoal removes carbon particulates be it CO2 or other hydro carbons.... and have all been SELLING these products for many decades... LOL they filed a patent, for something that everyone has been using for ~hundred of years in one form or another. Good luck getting that one past a judge. Always one stupid judge you can bribe I guess... This is called biology/chemsitry 101. This is exactly what bacteria/microryzal fungi biology does in soil that is not constantly being tilled 100%. Eats CH4/C02 sequesters the Carbon, outgasses Water and oxygen and some forms of hydroxlates. Another term is terra preta(Self sustaining carbon sequestration meters deep in some cases) Another term is biochar which also sequesters carbon and other minerals for instance Another term is multispecies soil biology. "Hydroxlates" (whatever those are) are not 'hydroxides'. In this situation the carbon is a substrate, the hydroxide 'stuck to it' is binding with the CO2. While the article doesn't indicate which hydroxide is being used, it sounds like either Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide. I have no doubt soil microbes are absorbing CO2, and in particular methane, at least some of the time. However, other processes in the soil may be breaking down plant matter at the same time and producing these two gasses, among others.
Ron Wagner + 702 June 9 Carbon is used in low pressure natural gas tanks that can be built in any form to fit the vehicle used. I haven't followed the progress on that for years though.
