Need for backup

Recommended Posts

Another useful contribution from the Manhattan Contrarian  albeit one saying what every energy realist has been trying to get across the information gap since the start of the near crazed obsession with wind and solar power, namely that power grids using wind and solar have to be backed up by some means - diesel, nuclear, gas, whatever - and that as those plants have to stand around idle for a good part of the time, depending on the supply of sun and wind, then they will not be economic so no private group wil build them. That means a lot of government spending or families being left in the dark for varying periods. Even building sufficient solar/wind generators for grids becomes difficult to justify economically beyond a certain point as they all - or mostly switch on at once and switch off at once when high and low presure systems pass through. Thos pressure systems cover very wide areas.
