rainman + 263 November 14, 2018 The European Union will respond with countermeasures if the United States imposes tariffs on its cars, the bloc’s trade commissioner told Germany’s Die Zeit weekly on Wednesday. “Then we will hit back, we can very quickly put together a long list of countermeasures that conform to World Trade Organisation rules,” Cecilia Malmstrom told the paper, adding the list could include cars, farming products and machinery. Meanwhile, German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier pledged to shield his country’s auto industry from a trade war with the U.S. amid signs that President Donald Trump will hold off for now on car tariffs. “We don’t know what decision the president will take but we will do everything to avoid an escalation,” Altmaier said Wednesday in a speech in Berlin. A Commerce Department probe into whether to slap levies on cars, vans and light trucks as well as car parts will be concluded soon, and talks between the U.S. and the European Union are in a “decisive phase,” he said.

One way street will lead to disaster. With China, our negotiations have, in the past, led to a one way street in our import/export balances. Time to even things up!
