First, I doubt it is a coincidence that the possibility of plant closures was announced just as contract negotiations with the UAW are to be done in 2019.  This is more than a passive threat that a contentious contract negotiation could result of job losses for union workers.

that sounds plausible. if so, that makes sense. US automakers been squeezed by the Union for a long time. it is hard to compete when you have to pay your aasembly line workers so much money.

The biggest reason though is that the car manufacturers are saying that they do not make much money on smaller cars, they are switching over to SUV's that bring a bigger profit margin. They also use more fuel compared to the small cars, so keep on buying those SUV's America!!!

Gotta love the logic that says we have to have an SUV but we bitch about the cost of fuel for them, not very bright, right?

The bottom line is that Americans' appetite for cars has cratered

It's why Ford got out of cars. And even Tesla's biggest detractors must admit they're here to stay. GM says these closures are about SUVs/trucks and EVs as they plan investment in both for their future.

The writing is on the wall and they see that.

Toyota, Honda, BMW, VW,... are asleep at the wheel.
