If you pump airdown an oil well you wont just get air back up, even in exhausted wells there will be some oil down there so old oilwells are not compatavlbe with slat caverns as suggested by the article and will need oil processsing facitliteis to operate. The old oil platforms will not be able to do that as they are all knackered and would cost a fortune to refurb and find space to put a turbine/compressor on there not to mention the new weight totally screwing up the weigh calcs.
