ThunderBlade + 231 TB February 8, 2019 Canada’s labour market surprised on the upside again in January, with the economy creating far more jobs than expected at the start of the year despite uncertainty about the direction of oil prices and concerns over slowing global growth. The country added 67,000 jobs last month, according to Statistics Canada. That’s up from the 9,300 gain recorded in December and blasted past economists’ forecast for a 5,000 rise. Wage growth, which is closely watched by the Bank of Canada, remained robust at 1.8 per cent — accelerating from the 1.5 per cent pace notched in December and faster than the 1.6 per cent the market had expected. However, the unemployment rate ticked up from 5.6 per cent to 5.8 per cent as more people — particularly women and youths — sought work, in a sign of how strength in the economy is pulling in new entrants into the labour market.
