Sounds Familiar: Netanyahu Tells Arab Citizens They’re Not Real Israelis

Recommended Posts

With a closely fought election looming, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear to the country’s large Arab minority that being Israeli means being a Jew. “Israel is not a state of all its citizens,” Netanyahu said on Facebook after a local celebrity criticized his assertion that Arab parties don’t belong in any government formed after the April 9 vote. “Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people—and it alone.” Netanyahu then appeared to equivocate, adding that Arabs have equal rights. Yet while he’s repeatedly attacked Arab parties and exploited fears over the Arab vote to drive right-wing turnout, Netanyahu had never before explicitly suggested that one can’t be Israeli and Arab at the same time. About a fifth of Israel’s 9 million people are both. The comments have refocused attention on the debate over Israel’s character. Torn between its Jewish identity and its status as a democratic nation-state, Netanyahu has prioritized the former to the detriment of the latter, critics say. “What’s taken for granted in democratic countries around the world, a state based on the principle of equality for all citizens, is considered anathema in Israel under Netanyahu’s racist regime,” said Hassan Jabareen, general director of Adalah—the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel.

Declaration of Independence: “[the State of Israel] will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture....

What about idea of Israel as “a state of all it citizens.”? Structural discrimination, and "naked" racism...

Hard speech, nothing new, but it's a dangerous. Elections are close. But in state with 9 milion 1.6 million Arabs/Muslims live in Israel, and "about a fifth of Israel’s 9 million people are both.(Israeli and Arab in same time)" ..

Yup. Anything short of fully supporting the extermination of Palestinians (Muslim and Christian) is viewed as 'anti semetic' these days by Netanyahu.

Just a gentle note to say that the Semites include both the Jewish peoples AND the original Palestinians, the Canaanites (among other tribes).   Today, the idea of the Semites forgets that tidbit, and focuses only on the Jews.  Nope.

When someone says "you are an anti-Semite" (for criticizing the Likud Party),  be sure to respond that both Jews and Palestinians are Semites.

Remember also that Netanyahu had the appalling bad manners and effrontery to show up at the White House and spend 20 minutes ragging on the American Government in general and his host Barack in particular.  Personally, I would have shut off his microphone, had the secret service hustle him to the exit, and informed the embassy that Netanyahu had 24 hours to leave the country.  What a pig.  Meanwhile, Netanyahu is currently being indicted for fraud.  Just lovely.

It is my prediction that eventually the Palestinians will dominate in Israel, and the Jews will have to discard the Constitution to suppress them.  The reason is that the Arab peoples there have a high fecundity rate, and the Jews have a remarkably low reproduction.  The only way Israel can remain Jewish-majority is to import Jews from other countries, which it has done, from Russia and Belarus.  Previously it imported Jews from Poland.  But all those groups are also not reproducing, so Jewish numbers are decreasing by half each generation.  I predict Likud will declare the Palestinians to be non-citizens, soon enough.  Just lovely.

As an interesting aside, the DNA patterns of Jews and Canaanites are identical.  Their difference is religion - only religion.  And that raw truth seriously unsettles the Likud Party.

just a reminder to tread lightly on such a polarizing topic. I am sure you will all continue to have the restraint shown thus far that is necessary to continue this conversation.

as everyone is already so astutely doing, let's be careful to stick to facts and avoid sweeping generalizations on either side of the aisle.

Additionally, let's also remember that a good chunk of the problems in the Middle East result from the decisions made both after WWI and WWII, by the Europeans including the British with the Balfour Declaration, that carving out a chunk of Palestine via the Palestine Mandate into a homeland for Jews from Europe, who had not lived there for 2,000 years, and pushing the Arab Palestinians off their land on the theory that Jews had occupied it millennia ago (after pushing the Canaanites off some 5,000 years ago), all of which was undeniably "ethnic cleansing,"  was not exactly going to create warm and fuzzy feelings all around.  And today the world has to continue to grapple with the now-deeply entrenched animosities that those old Decisions created.

November 2, 1917 started and set off the Zionist Movement, and the Likud is the outgrowth of Mr. Balfour and his fuzzy concepts.  Would the world be better off if the Jews had not migrated to Palestine, and had stayed in Poland, Russia and Belarus?  Arguably, yes. Did the British understand that they were setting off ethnic cleansing?  Of course they did; the British did exactly the same thing in Northern Ireland, push the Irish off the land in order to award land tracts to Scots that supported the English Crown.  You saw where that policy ended up.  Internecine warfare follows the British Empire around, altogether a difficult end-game.  India and Pakistan comes to mind.

What does Israel have in common with the Kaliningrad Oblast?  Both are the most heavily militarized pieces of land on the face of the planet. Just lovely.

I thought most jews, especially Askenazi's were more akin to Khazars who converted to Judaism when sandwiched between Christian states to the North and Muslims states to the south.

Basically the whole ethnic link back to the 'Holy Land' is BS in the majority of cases.
