50 shades of black + 254 April 8, 2019 According to agencies, Libya is on the brink of a new war. Deaths and displacements mounted in splintered Libya on Monday as eastern forces sought to push into the capital Tripoli, disregarding global appeals for a truce in the latest of a cycle of warfare since Muammar Gaddafi’s fall in 2011.The fighting threatens to disrupt oil supplies, fuel migration to Europe and wreck U.N. plans for an election to end rivalries between parallel administrations in east and west. The eastern Libyan National Army (LNA) forces of Khalifa Haftar - a former general in Gaddafi’s army - said 19 of its soldiers had died in recent days as they closed in on the internationally recognized government in Tripoli. A spokesman for the Tripoli-based Health Ministry said on Monday fighting in the south of the capital had killed at least 25 people, including fighters and civilians, and wounded 80. The United Nations said 2,800 people had been displaced by clashes and many more could flee, though some were trapped.“The United Nations continues to call for a temporary humanitarian truce to allow for the provision of emergency services and the voluntary passage of civilians, including those wounded, from areas of conflict,” it said in a statement. Haftar’s LNA, which backs the eastern administration in Benghazi, took the oil-rich south of Libya earlier this year before advancing fast through largely unpopulated desert regions toward the coastal capital.

ceo_energemsier + 1,818 cv April 9, 2019 (edited) It is rinse and repeat. Mistakes of Iraq and elsewhere repeat by so called bold and humanitarian administration, go and remove a strongman who had a control over all the different extremists and factions , go in supporting a group of people who are affiliated directly and indirectly with the ones who we have fought and keep fighting , ones who maintain extremist views. Control of oil means these whacky extremists have more influence, we saw what they tried to do in Iraq and Syria. The admin that pulled this one , was aware of the problems in N. Africa yet they decided to go in anyways. To them at the time sanctions didnt work? didnt want to work? No red line in the sand in Libya. Atleast it was stable and not a sanctuary of the factions and factions of extremists. Yes, The US is pulling troops out because we dont want to have "boots" on the ground.. the key promise of the admin which created the Libya fiasco, "no boots on the ground", so why were there US boots on the ground? No, we dont need our troops engaging in this war. Let the UN go in do manage it. Ofcourse the Russians will be there, the Iranians will be there. Everyone knew that the "diplomatic efforts" were not going to bear any meaningful, sustainable fruit. There is too much hatred, too much greed for oil resources and power.
