Oil Spill In Iraq Goes Unmentioned because it's commonplace?

Trying to wrap my head around this. TankerTrackers is reporting a possible oil spill in Iraq. 

"2ND UPDATE! We now have TWO anonymous industry sources that confirm it was an oil spill. The reason why this didn’t go public is because it is “common” & therefore neglected. A few decades of war and environmental disasters made a lot of people numb in pursuit of profit. #OOTT"

Yeah, this isn't the west. Oil spills don't count unless they lead to massive protests about destroyed farmland, etc a decade after the fact. (like Nigeria)

Don't even get me started on Nigeria. Not even sure what the Avengers are protesting anymore.
