Pavel + 384 PP May 9, 2019 In fresh show of naval force in the contested South China Sea, a U.S. guided missile destroyer conducted drills with a Japanese aircraft carrier, two Indian naval ships and a Philippine patrol vessel in the waterway claimed by China, the U.S. Navy said on Thursday. While similar exercises have been held in the South China Sea in the past, the combined display by four countries represents a fresh challenge to Beijing as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens to hike tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. “Professional engagements with our allies, partners and friends in the region are opportunities to build upon our existing, strong relationships,” Commander Andrew J. Klug, the captain of the U.S. destroyer, the USS William P. Lawrence, said in a statement.Japan sent one of its two big aircraft carriers, the Izumo, while India deployed a destroyer, the INS Kolkata, and a tanker, the INS Shakti. The week of joint drills, which ended Wednesday, comes after two other U.S. warships sailed near islands in the region claimed by China on Monday, prompting a protest from Beijing, which said the action infringed its sovereignty. The U.S. Navy says it conducts such freedom of navigation operations in international waters around the world, even in seas claimed by its allies, without political considerations.

The U.S. Navy says it conducts such freedom of navigation operations in international waters around the world, even in seas claimed by its allies, without political considerations. China is not only claiming islands. She is making absurd maritime claims against several SE Asian nations. Look up 9 dash line. The upside to these artificial islands China has created is they have committed themselves to the defense of fixed, exposed, and small areas. This means they can easily be saturated with missiles launched from many different platforms (sub, fighter/bomber jet, mobile ground based rocket launchers and even artillery) from every direction. Strictly speaking Japan has no aircraft carriers. Although I have heard these copter carriers are or will be modified to support a variant of the F-35 capable of landing on and taking off from them. Currently their best use probably is, appropriately, supporting infantry assaults on islands and not operating as a blue water carrier like US Navy carriers.
Meredith Poor + 895 MP May 10, 2019 Japan doesn't have any 'Aircraft Carriers'. They are, shall we say, oversized 'destroyers'. The US doesn't have any 'Aircraft Carriers' either. They are 'nuclear powered airports'.

China's aggression and boldness have woken up the "free world" and the game is on. It is tyranny versus freedom and it is a close game but freedom will win.
