Is 30% Solar Import Tariff Going to hurt US solar?

Recommended Posts

How badly is the 30% import tariff on solar panels really going to hurt US solar companies? I know this is hitting out at China, and at first glance it seems it would be good for US solar. Digging deeper, looks like it's going to harm US manufacturers as well.

Actually, it depends where you are in solar business. If you're manufacturing solar panels, this will benefit you. If you're installing, it will hurt. It'll slow down new solar capacity as I see it. And it will hurt any producers here who are using Chinese parts to manufacture solar panels. Still looking into it myself, but that's what I've understood so far.

SunPower and First Solar stocks look like they're doing just fine ... both up right now 2% and 3%.

Don't know about the washing machine impact, but SunPower was squawking early this morning about losing on this deal, but their shares seem to be doing just fine as TraderTate says.

Solar Industry Association is saying that jobs will be the bit loser here. Estimates are that this move will cost 23,000 jobs, or 9% of the solar workforce.

They're claiming 100k jobs will be created. Not sure how they reached that number, but...yeah.

well, a couple foreign companies are looking to set up shop in the United States to avoid the tariffs, which makes sense.

SunPower just put its expansion plans on hold over these tariffs ....

yeah. That's a $20-million US factory expansion we're talking about (and the jobs that would go along with that). They are dangling this out there, saying no expansion until their solar panels are excluded from tariffs.

still not exactly clear on how their solar panels are affected by tariffs.

Because SunPower has its biggest manufacturing facilities in Mexico and Philippines. Bring your manufacturing back to the states and all will be well.
