This is one reason why I don't have a Facebook account, it's the epicentre of such practices. Of course, advertising has been doing this for decades if not centuries, mostly selling stuff not really related to the product at all but designed to push emotional buttons to purchase a product for entirely different reasons rather than it's actual purpose. It's one of the core reasons why advertisement driven consumerism is so wasteful and destructive to our surroundings and why many people can no longer recognize truth from falsehood regardless of how daftly it's presented.
