I believe the US would expect to be attacked as these types of attacks are defeated regularly. Large successful attacks on the US would dramatically increase citizen resolve to demand the military to respond in an overwhelming way.

I've worked with Iranians as well.

And I still have never personally met an Iranian that liked or supported the Iranian government.
