Jan van Eck + 7,558 MG February 23, 2021 2 hours ago, Ward Smith said: Sorry Jan, but I respectfully disagree with you and agree with El Gato. Ward, please don't confuse me with the quotes that were taken from a certain Resignation Letter from the leader of the Burlington, VT, Republican Party. I had nothing to do with that Letter, did not ghost-write it, do not claim I ascribe to it, and have nothing to do with the author. I copied and pasted the bulk of it merely to show that dissension in the ranks extends even to this sleepy part of the nation. As to the veracity of the representations, that burden is for the writer to bear. All that said, everyone here seems to forget just how far to the Right the current Republican party has shifted. I would point to the 1952-1960 time bracket where General Dwight Eisenhower was President. A key plank of his was universal single-payer health care, a program that goes far left of what Hillary Clinton contrived. By "single-payer" it was meant that the Federal Government would foot the bills through the general tax revenue, all services without any charge or even co-pay to anybody in the nation. Thus, no health-insurance industry (and no premiums). That was mainstream Republicanism back in the day. Although I have not studied the Eisenhower proposals in depth, I think I can safely conclude that it intended that there would be no fee-for-service. I.e. all physicians, nurses, everybody, would be a public servant, paid a straight salary. Hard to imagine republicans today agreeing with that specific value set. Just saying. 2

surrept33 + 609 st February 23, 2021 Trump's party (by this I mean the Republicans, not the Democrats) lost the Presidency, House, and Senate. I guess Trump appointed a bunch of judges (this is pretty random in terms of who dies and what you may be able to "expect" from a judge) and started a bunch of trade wars. What did he win from those economic wars? 1

I.e. all physicians, nurses, everybody, would be a public servant, paid a straight salary. Hard to imagine republicans today agreeing with that specific value set. Just saying. Jan, I would use public education system in the US to reinforce my disagreement about the outcome regardless of the intention. Corrupt people will find way to corrupt things so I would focus in downsize the public sectors and regulation the corporation to increase private competitions and less in the subsidies sides. IMHO inequality in the US came from very negative mindset that the low income feel that they are not that far to the high income in the values of their skill sets visioning and efforts not only from salary jobs but since in schools. If they feel they were born in the wrong skin colors or families so I would say the same the inequality in being born in the US and other third world countries where going to school itself is a luxury. I don't think a fast food worker in US works harder than fast food worker in the poor countries yet the income is tremendously different for the same job value ( the price of meat in the US is similar to VN if not cheaper, people in VN simply have less meat). The gap in inequality between professional jobs and general labors in VN are much bigger than in the US but they wouldn't complain. I couldn't compare IT worker job US and VN because it is much complicated to compare and it is hard to tell how much time investment or risk taking involves or values of the product but I doubt my skills worth the differences. I am not out of touch with the poor people as my net worth is negative with mortgage. My wife grew up in poverty, with a divorced family and her mum really didn't care about her ( and I would guess that was why she attached to me in middle school and later flied to NZ to marry me after 10 years of no contact ). All she did was trying to get good marks, getting to gifted class, getting into top school and top university. She doesn't have a US college degrees but since came to the US, she works hard to learn from her job although I pushed her to do college at night for a engineer degree to match her title ( She completed her Associate this year) . Her income is similar to me but she has 10 hours overtime every week. I assure you not many countries that investment in the effort of working and learning can have that kind of pay off. Learning out of your comfort zone means constantly being slapped in the face that you are not as smart as you thought you are. But instead of the society, education, politicians, media embrace the values of effort as a map for youngster who have ignorant parents, all they can hear is the condition they were in is the because of social inequality and it is someone else's fault, or because the rich exploited them and they deserve more to get their votes and destroyed their potentials. I taught Vietnamese to US born Vietnamese kids in temple (pre covid19 time). I have a student who didn't know what career should he go to college for. I persuaded him to choose IT. He listened, intended to choose the easier IT degree because the other one are too hard. I told him because that is hard and that's why you will have better chance to find job when graduate. I told him to apply internship to big tech, he listened. I prepared him within my knowledge for the interview and this summer, when he finishes his 2nd year, he will have an internship as software engineer in Amazon and his wage in that 3 months would be higher than me. But the most important thing is his future is secured. Youngster are potential but are vulnerable to go the wrong direction as they are dreamer and have no vision but from dramma or tv shows and they need parents, brothers, or teachers or society to motivate them to strive hard. Everyone is young once and it will benefit greatly to reduce the gap in inequality. The current social theme will make inequality worse in a free society unless we all have nothing to do. My philosophy is if people around me get better, then somehow I will be better off.
