jalthoff4 + 6 July 14, 2023 After reading several of the more recent posts on this topic, to me there seems to be a considerable disconnect between those who think the novelty of EVs has worn off and that their obvious downsides have ushered in a decline, and those who think that demand is sort of normalizing and that the adoption of EVs is still on track. I dont know where to get raw data on EV sales to do a legitimate analysis, but I wanted to throw out a few anecdotes: I fit the demographic that typically owns a model 3. I dont own one because my wife and I both WFH and only need 1 car. We bought a gas-powered car for the usual suspect reasons mentioned above, especially range anxiety. If I had to start commuting again, I would buy a used model 3 or a new Prius. My wife hates the Prius, so probably a used model 3. I dont think there's a ton of utility in a new model 3 as compared to a used one. My wife owns a 4-legged cash furnace commonly known as a horse. We are looking at trading in our Mercedes GLC for something that can tow said horse. There would need to be a couple of generations of super long-range ford lightnings before Id consider an EV for that purpose. Teslas are everywhere and no one cares if you own one anymore. So the wow-factor is gone. A lot of reports are beginning to outline the fact that EVs arent the panacea for the environment they were sold to be. Even the Economist has reported that nickel mining, etc damages the environment. So my hypothesis is that EVs have settled into being gee-whiz commuters and the new ones are competing with the used ones AND all of the new options that are out or on the horizon. Additionally, you can no longer feel particularly smug about "doing your part" to save the planet just by owning one. Why cant you have 1 bus from LA to Victorville (approx 84 miles) and then get on another bus to take you to Las Vegas (approx 186 miles)? Its only like changing trains after all. The region is full of drivers who love to go out and do battle in their V8 powered SUV's, BMW's of every sort, and HEMI powered pickups. But the Teslas, even the Model 3's are eating their lunch.
