E-car Sales Collapse

Recommended Posts

This is a good read and explains a lot

https://www.fastmarkets.com/insights/slowdown-in-china-ev-sales-expected#:~:text=As a result of these three factors%2C Fastmarkets, where estimated growth was 72.2% year on year.

Slowdown in China EV sales due to subsidy cuts and increased vehicle costs, however its stil a 43.8% increase YOY which although is technically a slowdown is still incredible growth which any industry sector would kill for.

EVS have had their day, the market is saturated and buyer interest is now eroding.

https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/waiting-buyers-come-unsold-electric-vehicles-piling-car-dealerships-says-report

"According to an April 2023 report by consumer intelligence company JD Power, more Americans are unwilling to buy EVs.Ā In March, 21 percent of new vehicle shoppers said they were ā€œvery unlikelyā€ to consider an EV, up from 17.8 percent in January.

During this period, the proportion of people who said they were ā€œvery likelyā€ to buy an EV remained flat at around 26 percent.

ā€œLack of public charging infrastructure and price have been the top two concerns for the past 10 months, along with related issues involving range anxiety, time required to charge, and power outage and grid concerns,ā€ the report said."

"Very likely" is much higher than "very unlikely."

This is pro-ev data.

After reading several of the more recent posts on this topic, to me there seems to be a considerable disconnect between those who think the novelty of EVs has worn off and that their obvious downsides have ushered in a decline, and those who think that demand is sort ofĀ normalizing and that the adoption of EVs is still on track. I dont know where to get raw data on EV sales to do a legitimate analysis, but I wanted to throw out a few anecdotes:

I fit theĀ demographic that typically owns a model 3. I dont own one because my wife and I both WFH and only need 1 car.Ā  We bought a gas-powered car for the usual suspect reasons mentioned above, especially range anxiety.Ā

If I had to start commuting again, I would buy aĀ usedĀ model 3 or a new Prius.Ā  My wife hates the Prius, so probably a used model 3. I dont think there's a ton of utility in a new model 3 as compared to a used one.

My wife owns a 4-legged cash furnace commonly known as a horse.Ā  We are looking at trading in our Mercedes GLC for something that can tow said horse.Ā  There would need to be a couple of generations of super long-range ford lightnings before Id consider an EV for that purpose.

Teslas are everywhere and no one cares if you own one anymore. So the wow-factor is gone.

A lot of reports are beginning to outline the fact that EVs arent the panacea for the environment they were sold to be. Even the Economist has reported that nickel mining, etc damages the environment.

So my hypothesis is that EVs have settled into being gee-whiz commuters and the new ones are competing with the used ones AND all of the new options that are out or on the horizon. Additionally, you can no longer feel particularly smug about "doing your part" to save the planet just by owning one.Ā Ā No wonder Elon wants you to go back to the office.Ā Ā

Ā

you posted

15 millions in value per month. If a car costed an average of $30k, then it is 500, 000 cars per month

those numbers (15 million in value per month)Ā  are .......Millions of Units,Ā Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate

Ā

Ā

Ā

the numbers have nothing to do with the value in dollars........

so when you read may 31, 2023...at 15.60 M....it means in the month of May sales of all vehicle was 15.6 million divided by 12 or 1.3 million vehicles were sold in the month of May in the US and that EVs (from other data put out by Cox was around 8 percent) so approximatelyĀ 96,000 EVs sold in May of 2023 in the US alone

here is the link to the FED on total sales on an annual rate

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/TOTALSA

they are put out by the FED

they are not numbers of dollars in a month.....again they areĀ Millions of Units,Ā Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate

Ā

GOT IT??????

GM are very late to the EV party so its not surprising that their sales are terrible as their vehicles are terrible compared to the competition, which is exactly what the article says. This doesnt mean EV's arent being sold it means the vehicles GM produce are sh*t!

Had to check what San Bernardino County is: it's 80% of the area between LA and Las Vegas. Yes, fully agree, that's not EV Bus territory. What I meant was busses that would e.g., connectĀ Long Beach to Anaheim.

EV buses, as in local route, I assume. Not long-haul.

Hybrids count as fossil fuel vehicles.

The EV vehicles are piling up on the lots, the market for them appears saturated, that niche market appears saturated and at a dead end.

Long haul buses -Ā  no way indeed (although the Tesla Semi truck seems to work, so why not a bus?).

EV vehicles piling up on the lots? I still see an average of 21 weeks waiting time for a new one.Ā

Why cant you have 1 bus from LA to Victorville (approx 84 miles) and then get on another bus to take you to Las Vegas (approx 186 miles)? Its only like changing trains after all.

This double decker bus will do 250 miles on 1 charge so would easily get you to Vegas from Victorville.

Focus: 300,000 companies in Germany are on the verge of bankruptcy

Ā

One in ten German companies has encountered financial problems and is at risk of bankruptcy.

Currently, the European Union is faced with an energy crisis, provoking inflation and rising energy costs.

Germany to close all 84 of its coal-fired power plants, will rely primarily on renewable energy

The plan includes some $45 billion in spending to mitigate the pain in coal regions.

45 BILLION GONE WITH THE WIND.

Y-on-Y Inflation in the euro-area is currently standing at 5%, with a peak of 10% around March 2023. The ECB interest rate is 3.75%.

Y-on-Y inflation in the USA is at 3%, with a peak of 9% around June 2022. Your Fed interest rate is 5%.

Not a big difference, and most of it can be explained by the Russian invasion (EU) and the slow recovery from the COVID crisis (USA).

Enjoy.....we now have a majority of AmericansĀ considering a new or used EV..........

Sediment is turning against your Clunkers

Okay, let's try it again,

"According to an April 2023 report by consumer intelligence company JD Power, more Americans are unwilling to buy EVs.Ā In March, 21 percent of new vehicle shoppers said they were ā€œvery unlikelyā€ to consider an EV, up from 17.8 percent in January."

And the wild printing of money by U.S. and European governments to fund the EV revolution....which will again cause another inflationary spike going forward.

An exercise in self-flagellation.

So you agree the revolution is happening!Ā

You can't simultaneously say the EV revolution will not happen and say the revolution will ruin the economy.

Dealers Now Have Nearly Two Million New Cars Sitting On Their Lots

Electric vehicles are leading the way when it comes to sitting unsold on dealer lots.

Ā

The big reason for this 53-day average supply comes down to one thing: EVs. According to the outlet, those vehicles have a 103-day supply. That makes it the only segment other thanĀ ultra-luxury and high-end luxuryĀ to have supplies on the other side of 100 days. However, Cox does point out thatĀ full-size carsĀ were close at 99 days, but thatā€™s not really that surprising.

You should understand the obvious logic here.Ā  You can't complain that EV's will strain the grid and ruin the economy if you also say very few EV's will be sold.

Pick one.

In the Mid-Atlantic region, the appeal of the Tesla is that it will smoke any ICE muscle car it encounters.

The region is full of drivers who love to go out and do battle in their V8 powered SUV's, BMW's of every

sort, and HEMI powered pickups.Ā  Ā But the Teslas, even the Model 3's are eating their lunch.

And then it costs about half or less to re-fuel.Ā  Ā The race is mostly over.Ā  Ā
