China January Soybean Imports From U.S. Nearly Double vs. December

China’s imports of U.S. soybeans nearly doubled in January from the previous month as cargoes booked after a Sino-U.S. trade truce arrived in the world’s top oilseed importer, according to Chinese customs data published late on Monday. China brought in 135,814 tonnes of U.S. soybeans in January, up 95 percent from 69,298 tonnes in December. But the figure was still down 99.7 percent from 5.82 million tonnes a year earlier as Beijing’s hefty tariffs on American shipments curbed purchases. China typically buys from the United States in the last quarter and first couple of months of the year, when the U.S. harvest dominates the market. But Chinese buyers have steered clear of U.S. produce amid the tit-for-tat trade dispute and scooped up Brazilian beans instead.

The tariffs resulted in the destruction of the soybean market and threatening farmers. I think they've done long-term damage, and in the future will not be able to "catch" 100% of the soybean exports back ....

The soybean farmers in IA, the Dakotas and Neb are getting buried. Whole crops rotted in the fields because China stopped buying. They got $12B bailout to "not grow" their crops....

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.........

there are parallels to American History in this........

Back during the time of the "War Between the States",   the Industrial North sold "finished goods" to the Agrarian South,  and the South sold "raw materials" to the North......

Then the Northern controlled Congress passed a series of laws and rules that restricted the Souths ability to get a fair price for it's raw materials,  while at the same time,  the North continued to increase the price for the finished goods it was selling the South.....

In other words,  the North rigged the market against the South.......

.................

Today,  China mostly sells finished goods to the USA,  and the USA sells mostly "raw materials" to China..........

................

see where this is going.......?     The USA is the SOUTH while China is the NORTH..........

..................

Only , this time,   President Trump is trying to "un-rig" the market that has been rigged in China's favor since 1992.........

..................

China used to get most of their soybeans from the USA,  then switched to South American soybeans last fall when Trump started "un-rigging" the market.....

But Trump will win..........

South American soybeans have increased in price,  while USA prices remain unchanged..........

China will come back......

They have no choice........

They have a billion mouths to feed..........

The Chicoms outsmarted Trump, they are now purchasing soybean at a much lower price.

As stated above, they have a billion mouths to feed ...

Trump should not delay the 25 % tariff, it is a big tactical mistake.
